The City of Long Beach, Department of Health and Human Services, is recruiting among existing City employees for two (2) unclassified, at-will Public Health Associate III positions in the Community Health Bureau. Under general supervision, the Public Health Associate (PHA) III will be stationed at the St Mary’s or North Atlantic WIC sites in the Nutrition Services Division to lead, plan, organize, implement, and supervise Nutrition Services Program activities.
- EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

- Provides nutrition and health education services in a public health setting to Women, Infants, and Children (WIC);
- Supervises staff by planning and directing the work of others and promotes a productive work environment;
- Disseminates nutrition education materials, provides individual counseling, breastfeeding education, and community referrals to WIC participants;
- Promotes, supports, and educates WIC participants about breastfeeding;
- Assesses nutritional status of participants and refers them to the Registered Dietitians Nutritionist (RDN) as needed for advanced nutrition counseling;
- Assists participants with linkages to health care, social services, and community resources;
- May participate in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating policies and procedures for the WIC program;
- May conduct and participate in outreach events in the community;
- Attends State WIC Office and City required trainings;
- May prepare and generate written and/or audio-visual materials for nutrition education and breastfeeding classes;
- May oversee the development and ensure compliance of program rules and regulations through Continuous Quality Improvement audits;
- May provide presentations about nutrition, breastfeeding, and public health topics to staff, public health officials, outside agencies, and the community;
- Prepares reports for the Nutrition Services Officer; and,
- Performs other related duties as required.
- REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

- Current City of Long Beach employee.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification.
- Four years of experience supporting health education programs [Academic degrees in Public Health, Health Sciences, or a closely related field may be substituted for required experience on a year-for-year basis (proof required for substitution if applied*).]
- Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
- Valid motor vehicle operator license. (Required to obtain a California motor vehicle operator license within 6 months if out of state. DMV K4 driver license information report printout required during onboarding for California residents.)
*Required documents, such as transcripts, degrees, certificates, or licenses, must be uploaded to the online application in PDF format at the time of filing. Proof of education for academic degrees should indicate the type of degree and date of degree conferral. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Health Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Professional experience working for a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program.
- Experience using the State of California WIC Information System Exchange (WIC WISE).
- Bilingual skills (Spanish and/or Khmer).
