Provides certified law enforcement duties for an assigned school campus of the Pinellas County Public Schools District. The work includes, but is not limited to campus patrol, crime prevention, crime detection and investigations and traffic control.
The School Resource Officer (SRO) program is a community-based, collaborative school policing and law enforcement initiative that provides all county public schools campuses with professionals who serve as role models. SROs have the full powers of law enforcement officers, including arrest powers. The School Resource Officer – Reserve holds the same level of authority and responsibility imparted upon full-time Law Enforcement Officer and the School Resource Law Enforcement Officer. Reserve SRO authority and responsibility may be limited by Largo Police Department policy and procedure.
Work is performed under the direction of a Police Sergeant. The School Resource Law Enforcement Officer will be tasked with the general safety of their assigned school and with minimal supervision with considerable latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures. Reserve SROs may be assigned shifts at more than one school during the year based on department need.
WORK SCHEDULE: Up to 1560 hours annually and 40 hours of training. The School Resource Law Enforcement Officer schedule will run concurrent to the student school schedule at the school the officer is assigned. This may include hours for activities that occur outside of the school’s standard school schedule hours.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have separated from all prior law enforcement agencies in good standing; successful completion of pre-employment criminal background check, drug testing, physical examination and psychological evaluation.

The Reserve School Resource Officer holds the same level of authority and responsibility imparted upon full-time Law Enforcement Officers; the School Resource Law Enforcement Officer’s authority is not limited to the confines of their assigned school; as such, they are expected to take action when circumstances dictate or when called upon to do so by a Commanding Officer of the Largo Police Department
Responds to assignments received as a result of calls for service from the public and from superior officers
Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, motorcycle or in police vehicles; enforces traffic and criminal laws, parking regulations, and domestic violence injunctions; performs investigations, provides service, and generally provides for the safety of the public
Responds to the scene of crimes, traffic accidents, and incidents; interviews suspects, prisoners, and complainants
Attends training for the City when necessary
Maintains radio contact with department personnel via two-way radio
Searches for and apprehends suspects involved in criminal activity
Transports prisoners to the police building, detention facility, or treatment facility as required
Testifies and presents evidence in court regarding policing duties
Interacts with diverse groups of people within the department and the community in order to detect, prevent, and investigate suspected criminal activity; monitors businesses for compliance with laws and ordinances, and develops and maintains sources of information about criminal activities
Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents; responsible for safety of self, others, materials, and equipment
Assists medical personnel on site; assists other agencies as required
May be assigned special law enforcement related duties

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Eligible for State of Florida Law Enforcement Certificate issued by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) at time of application
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Sixty (60) semester credit hours from an accredited college or university (the 60 credit hours will be waived for applicants with at least two years prior law enforcement related experience or two years active military duty)
Law Enforcement Officer with firearms certification
Valid Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Tattoos: Largo Police Department policy states officers may not have tattoos below the wrist or above the collar. Tattoos located on an Officer’s legs will be permitted while the officer is in the bicycle uniform provided they meet the standards imposed by the Chief. No inappropriate or offensive tattoos will be allowed. Visible tattoos will have to be approved by the Chief of Police or his/her designee
Piercings: Visible body piercings are prohibited other than a standard ear piercing. Females may wear stud earrings

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment: 15% inside a climate controlled building; 85% outside which includes driving.
Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require; sitting approximately 30% of work time, standing approximately 40% of work time, and walking approximately 30% of work time, depending on assignment. The job also requires frequent: bending/stooping, grasping, reaching, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 15 pounds, with occasional: fine manipulations, pulling/pushing, and repetitive motion. On rare occasions the work requires: climbing, crawling, kneeling, and lifting/carrying objects weighing 15 pounds or more.
Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Enough to hear alarm signals, radio transmissions, understand what others are saying in normal conversation, and detect specific noises or voices during group conversations. Speaking: Enough to communicate orally with others in person, via radio and telephone transmissions, and during formal presentations to groups. Seeing: Enough to operate a vehicle, read fine print and normal print, and observe numbers, view mobile computing screen, license plates, and street signs at night.
Driving Requirements: Requires occasional driving and possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Technology: The work requires ability to operate telephones, smart phones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators and all associated software.
