POSITION SUMMARY
The Emergency Department Technician is a support healthcare professional, who performs various duties, assisting the Emergency Department nurses and physicians in delivery of age-appropriate, quality patient care, in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of the RCH Nursing Service.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs routine treatment procedures, related to age, based on hospital policies, procedures, and protocols at the discretion of, and based on the judgment of, a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Obtains vital signs, finger stick blood glucose readings, EKGs as directed.
• Documents as instructed in the medical record (e.g. finger stick blood glucose results and EKGs completed). 
• Performs office-type duties, such as record-keeping and making phone calls.
• Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner.
• Maintains and respects all patient-related written and verbal information (confidentiality).
• Provides assistance to physicians during casting, suturing, and other procedures as designated by a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Observes patients and reports information or changes in the patients’ condition to the Registered Professional Nurse or Physician.
• Assists with care, preparation, after care, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile equipment, instruments, and supplies assigned to patient care, and reports problems to appropriate personnel.
• Assists with inventory by reordering and restocking Emergency Department supplies.
• Helps to prepare patient rooms and beds for incoming patients.
• Assists in transferring patients to and from ancillary departments, patient units, and to their discharge mode of transportation.
•  May respond to in-house “Code Blue” and other emergency situations if needed.
•  Collects specimens and transports to proper areas, as requested.
• Self directs personal learning needs on an ongoing basis.  Seeks learning    opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means, and keeps educational records current. 
• Is responsible and accountable to the Manager of Emergency Services for maintaining current BLS certification, and attending a Basic Dysrhythmia course.
•  Supports the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Nursing Service.
• Strives for quality in patient care and, as necessary, challenges and/or corrects
   errors of peers to ensure patient safety and well-being.
• Accountable for own conduct, and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
• Participates in and supports research programs, activities, and performance improvement activities.  Also, participates in activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care. 
• Maintains mandatory educational requirements based on JCAHO, IDPH, and  OSHA Standards.
  Takes responsibility for being informed via attendance at unit meetings, reading emails and other notices, reviewing meeting minutes, etc. 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have high school diploma or GED.
• Must be currently certified as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Service (EMS)-Basic (or higher), or Medical Assistant.

Experience

• Must be currently BLS certified.
• Must attend Basic Dysrhythmia course upon hire.
• Previous hospital experience preferred.
• Must show competency of those skills designated by the Manager of Emergency Services by written exam and/or demonstration.
• Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure. 
• Must have effective communication and teaching skills. 
• The ability to operate designated medical and computer equipment must be attained.

Work Environment/Physical Demands 

• Occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds with assistance. 
• Frequent lifting and/or handling of light weight items is likely.
• Frequent repositioning of patients is expected. 
• Requires sitting, standing, and walking a majority of the workday. 
• Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
• Ability to perform CPR is occasionally required—a strenuous activity.
• Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
• Exposure to communicable diseases is possible, and wearing PPE may be required.
