General Description
This position requires you to work collaboratively with multiple providers, including resident physicians, advanced practice providers, dentists, and pharmacists throughout the clinic. The interpreter is responsible for translating forms from English to Spanish as needed and providing Spanish interpretive services as requested by staff. At times the interpreter may be asked to perform direct patient care duties, as appropriate. This position will require OSHA training and will be subject to blood and other bodily fluids. In accordance with HIPAA regulations, this position requires full access to Protected Health Information (PHI). Such disclosure is necessary to perform the requirements of the job. Confidentiality of PHI must be maintained.

Working Conditions
The position requires normal range of body motion, hearing and eyesight in order to perform duties of the position. Requires hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, scanner, calculator and other office equipment. Employee must be able to write, speak, and hear. Employee must be able to read small print both on paper and on a computer screen for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time (6-8 hours). Occasionally you may lift and/or carry items weighing up to 25 pounds, bending, stooping, and stretching. Interaction with others is frequent and can often be disruptive so the ability to multi task is important. This is a medical office environment involving frequent contact with staff and patients. There will be exposure to airborne and bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials common in a clinic. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Essential Duties
1. Provide assistance to the Hispanic population by translating for patient care needs;
2. Accurately interpret and translate critical medical information between healthcare providers and patients;
3. Translate throughout the health center, working with both the providers and clinical staff to provide care;
4. Maintain the voicemail #300 for the Hispanic population, documenting messages per protocol;
5. Ensures appropriate forms are translated from English to Spanish as requested;
6. Help to schedule appointments/referrals/admissions for Spanish speaking patients outside the clinic;
7. Work collaboratively with the clinical team to promote continuity of patient care.
8. May assist providers/nursing staff with Medical Assisting duties as needed, tasks include:
a) Checking patients in for appointments: specifics include – obtaining blood pressure, height, weight, temperature, pulse, O2 saturation, etc.:
b) Assist with medication injections as needed according to protocol;
c) Prepare patient for procedures and ensures that all the appropriate instructions and equipment are arranged and ready;
d) May, with appropriate training, assist providers with certain procedures which may include:
i. Colposcopy;
ii. Cryotherapy;
iii. Endometrial Biopsy;
iv. Minor surgeries (toenail removal, cyst removal, mole removal, breast biopsies; lesion removal, etc.);
v. Sonograms;
vi. Vasectomy;
vii. Casting.
9. Assist clinical staff in daily operational activities;
10. Assist outreach staff in health promotion, education, and screening activities
11. Participate in meetings as required (joint staff, department).
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills Required
1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, and the public.
2. Must be able to speak/translate Spanish fluently.
3. Must be proficient with complicated medical terminology and concepts.
4. Must have the ability to translate forms from English to Spanish as requested.
5. Ability to prioritize tasks to provide appropriate, efficient and quality patient care.

8. Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules and regulations.

12. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel Spreadsheets, Windows, databases, graphs and the ability to write reports and correspondence by using proficient grammar, spelling and punctuation.
13. Must be able to document in a neat, legible manner and be able to spell medical terminology correctly.

18. Knowledge of standard office machines including copier, fax, multi-line phones, printers, scanners, etc.
Education and Experience
1. High school diploma;
2. 1 year experience in a Medical environment (not required but is beneficial);
3. Must be able to speak/translate Spanish fluently;
4. Must have and maintain CPR certification;
5. Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient and employee-base.
