Roetzel & Andress Hiring for Legislative Assistant at Columbus, OH Full Time

We are looking for a self-motivated, organized, Legislative Assistant for our downtown Columbus office. This position provides support to the Public Law Group practice at the Ohio Statehouse.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assist in the develop of state legislative and regulatory policies concerning a wide range of issues relevant to our client base.
• Develop and maintain relationships to enhance our clients’ positions and assist in shaping public policy initiatives.
• Monitor legislative activities, regulatory activities, as well as print and media broadcast as it relates to our clients.
• Complete and organize all information related to the submission of quarterly reports to the Ohio Attorney General’s office. Opening matters is expected.
• Work with team members in meetings with government officials to advance our clients goals.
• Receive new matters, run conflict checks, draft engagement letters and open in system.
• Monitor various news and media sites regarding issues that affect our clients, including assisting in daily and weekly news distributions. Legislative Assistants are expected to quickly learn how specific issues pertain to our clients so they can effectively monitor online publications for timely updates.
• Write memos and client communications on proposed legislation and amendments, Ohio politics and elections. Administrative events, and industry forums, in addition to providing extensive research on legislative, political and regulatory issues that pertain to our clients.
• Administrative tasks in relation to updating and maintaining reports required by JLEC or other state agency.
• Participate in relationship building and brand-messaging to strengthen our network and client base.
• Develop relationships and foster teamwork at all levels. Foster and maintain positive relationships with current Lobbyists, legislative and Administrative Staff.
• Schedule meetings with clients; internal colleagues; Statehouse, Statewide Offices, Administrative Departments, Boards or Commissions.
• Perform other duties or projects assigned consistent with the nature of the position and goals of the Public Law Group – this may include ordering and organizing lunches and after hour client events.
• Administrative duties including expense reports, check requests, organization of calendars and contacts; keeping all client matters and billing information in an organized chart for assignments and processing invoices for payment.

Skills, Qualifications & Educational Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• At least 2 years of experience in legislative policy, regulatory affairs, or relevant government relations.
• Ability and confidence to identify and analyze issues, make decisions, and initiate actions/solutions.
• Ability to respond to unexpected challenges, including proactively developing innovative solutions to complex problems while maintaining a professional demeanor.
• Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and manage sensitive situations with tact and discretion.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse group of internal and external clients, legislative members, attorneys, and staff.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain composure and demonstrate good judgment.
• Self-starter with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
• Technology savvy, with an advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Flexibility to work over-time when needed and attend after-hours events.
• Perform the duties above in a timely and accurate manner.
