Assists sewer maintenance repairer in cleaning, maintaining, and repairing sewer mains, wet walls, septic tanks, interceptors and manholes; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Sewer Maintenance Repairer I in that the Sewer Maintenance Helper assists and performs under close supervision the less skilled and helper work; whereas the Sewer Maintenance Repairer I performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of sewers.
Assists in installing and connecting sewer laterals; performs manual work in deep trenches, manholes and sewer tunnels; operates jackhammer in breaking pavement and digging trenches; mixes cement and mortar; digs holes, moves pipes; cuts bricks; assists in operating sewer cleaning equipment and spray painting equipment in cleaning and maintaining sewer lines; may be required to operate a light truck.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of general construction work.
Knowledge of: practices, tools and materials used in pipefitting and sewer maintenance work; operational principles and uses of simple construction equipment; hazards and safety practices of the work.
Ability to: perform heavy manual work under adverse conditions; withstand obnoxious odors and sights; utilize pipefitting tools and equipment; understand and follow written and oral instructions.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (Type 3).

Vacation
Eligible employees earn up to 21 days of vacation per year, with a maximum year-to-year carry over of 90 days. Eligibility to accrue vacation begins with the first work day.

Deferred Compensation Plan
Eligible employees may participate in the Island Savings Plan (a deferred compensation plan as provided under Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.) This is a supplemental retirement savings plan that allows for the investment of tax-deferred contributions into a variety of investment options.
Flex Spending Plan
Eligible employees can also participate in the County’s Flexible Spending plan, a way to set aside a portion of pay, before taxes, to pay for qualifying dependent care or medical expenses.
Employee Assistance Program
The County also offers a voluntary assistance program which provides its employees and their family members with free professional and confidential assistance in overcoming personal and work related problems.
Training
The County provides its employees with a variety of up-to-date training opportunities (i.e., computer application, professional seminars, heavy equipment operation, administrative & clerical skills, personal safety, etc.) to help them increase their knowledge, gain new skills, and to be more satisfied and effective in their jobs.
Leave Sharing
The County’s leave sharing program allows employees to donate accumulated vacation leave credits to a qualified fellow employee who has a serious personal illness or injury.
