Job Title: Private Chef

Reporting to: Estate Manager & Principal

Location: Alford, Massachusetts

Hours: Friday 7am-8pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am-9pm, Provisioning on Thursday, Occasional Weekdays (Monday-Wednesday)

Salary: $85,000+ gross per annum, dependent on experience

The Family: One Adult, Two Children (ages 5 & 7) + Guests & Staff

The Staff: Weekday Chef, Housekeepers, Tutors, Nannies, Estate Manager, Grounds Keeper

The Role

The chef’s primary responsibility is to ensure high quality, healthy meals and snacks are prepared over the weekend and that the kitchen is kept tidy and organized. The chef needs to display initiative but also be flexible to cook and operate according to the wishes of the family, and regularly liaising with the family’s weekday chef. The chef is responsible for all meal planning, shopping, and sourcing of ingredients for the family’s meals. These duties are performed for all regular meals and dinner parties, in addition to occasional holidays and events. The family appreciates a positive attitude and flexibility and may ask you to assist with responsibilities outside your job description from time to time. The family values proactive behavior, thoughtful planning, and support to facilitate the smooth operations of the household. The primary workdays will be Thursday (provisioning/meal planning), Friday – Sunday, with flexibility to work additional days during the week (with advance notice) when the weekday chef is travelling with the Principal.

Requirements

§ 4+ years’ experience working as private chef

§ Lives in the surrounding area

§ Must be open to feedback

§ Flexibility throughout weekdays and holidays (with advance notice)

§ Willingness to work well within a close-knit team of household staff

§ Understanding of the discretion and respect required to work in the family’s home, cautious of how personal belongings, furniture, kitchen equipment, and dishes are handled

§ Must wear appropriate chef attire required when working in the home

§ Full confidentiality required from all household staff, in the form of signed confidentiality agreement and non-disclosure agreement

§ Excellent references required from both current and previous employers

§ Background check and Covid vaccine required

§ Strong command of English language; good communication skills, both written and verbal

§ A valid Driver’s License, with own car to travel to and from work

§ Legally able to work within the United States

Key Responsibilities*

Shopping & Meal Preparation

• Purchasing groceries and necessary ingredients for weekend meals and snacks
• Ensuring home is always stocked with basic groceries
• Managing kitchen equipment and supplies
• Communicating with the weekday chef to create menu ideas and coordinate serving times
• Compiling interesting and diverse menu suggestions
• Regularly researching best suppliers and negotiating best prices for organic seasonal fruit, vegetables, meat, etc.

Cooking & Serving

§ Preparing healthy, clean meals for Principal and guests, as well as any additional snacks, juices, etc. as requested

§ Preparing kid-friendly meals and snacks daily for the family’s children

§ Plating meals for the live-in staff prior to serving to the family

§ Plating and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner

§ For meals and snacks (i.e. dinner) prepared for later in the day or for the following morning, store in appropriate containers and if applicable, plate portions to then store for later use and leave with instructions

§ Ensuring meals are easy/practical to prepare whether on the go or at home

Cleaning

• Tidying the kitchen after meal preparation and ensuring all food prep (i.e. equipment, ingredients, etc.) is stored in the appropriate location and nothing is out on counters
• Ensuring the refrigerator and cupboards are kept clean and very organized and that unused food items are discarded weekly, liaising with the housekeepers as appropriate
• Caring for and maintaining all cooking equipment to a high standard

Supporting the Family & Team

§ Greeting guests, tradesmen, and couriers at the door

§ Working dinner parties as needed

§ Preparing for family travel back to the city, assisting with packing luggage and loading the car with children’s snacks, supplies, groceries, etc. to ensure a prompt departure time

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: From $85,000.00 per year
