Position: Medical Billing – Coder & Reimbursement Specialist

Position Summary:

Our charting and billing program are entirely computer based, therefore a proficiency with computers is expected. Responsible for reviewing medical records, coding, and processing all charges for services rendered by Sound Retina’s providers in a timely manner. Responsible for daily submission of claims. Responsible for keeping up-to-date on payer rules related to drugs and specialized services utilized by the practice. Creating rules and reports in the practice management system, monitoring reimbursement and outstanding related A/R, researching and correcting any issues identified, and providing regular reporting to Director of Finance and Business Services.

Position Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Understanding of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 coding, procedures, reimbursement practices and related practice or payer policies.
• Experience with professional coding of CPT, ICD-10 and HPCS codes and the application of each code set providing education to physicians and other staff as necessary with Director’s approval.

• Prepares charge description master—CPT codes, standard/research prices to ensure optimal facility fees and maximize collections for approval of Director of Finance and Business Office Services. Reviews and reports on changes in pricing, CPT codes, HCPCS codes, and revenue codes for accuracy and compliance with all applicable charging and billing guidelines.
• Responsible for being current and knowledgeable regarding coding for services rendered, a full understanding of drug reimbursement coding and rules, as well as understanding Federal guidelines and changes relating to services rendered by Sound Retina. Uses appropriate internet sources to gather current information regarding payer policies, payments, and coverage issues. Informs Director of any changes or updates in reimbursement for dissemination to physicians and staff.
• Processes all charges for services rendered in practice management system in a timely manner as identified by practice workflows.
• Monitor age of charge tickets ensuring timely coding and data entry. Works missing charge tickets on a weekly basis to ensure processing.
• Submits claims from the practice management system within 48 hours (2 business days) of charges being completed.

• Works all EDI and payer denials withing 24 hours (1 business day) and resubmits claims as necessary.

• Works compliantly in all aspects of the coding and billing processes.
• Works outstanding A/R and denials in conjunction with the A/R specialist to ensure the practice is receiving maximum timely reimbursement.

• Provides regular reporting as requested by management relating to this outstanding A/R.
• Accurately identifies, organizes & compiles payor rules related to drugs for department, reporting inconsistencies or issues to Director of Finance and Business Office Services.
• Reviews and reports any coding issues identified to Director of Finance and Business Office Services. Reviews documentation to ensure that coding is correct. Participates in coding audits performed.
• May attend seminars or training at the request of the practice. Travel may be required.
• Perform other duties as directed by the Director of Finance and Business Office Services, Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Coding Certification – CPC, CCS-P, or other related coding certification preferred with ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
• High school diploma, college course, or related degree preferred
• Experience professional fee coding with CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS codes
• Ability to work quickly and accurately, with attention to detail
• Minimum three to five years billing and coding experience in a medical practice. Retina or high-cost drug-related field strongly preferred.
• Good organizational and multi-tasking skills
• Possesses the ability to handle stress well and get along with others.
• Possesses the ability to tolerate noisy and quiet environments, being mindful of others.
• Possesses the ability to tolerate changes in temperature.
• Possesses the ability to sit at a computer for 8 – 10 hours per day, type using a keyboard and computer mouse, view and read information displayed on a computer monitor.
• Possesses the ability to work with exposure to some paper dust. MSOffice experience with good working knowledge of Excel is preferred
• Good oral, written communication and interpersonal skills. Strong teamwork mindset.
• Able to demonstrate independent judgment and initiative
