South Jersey Industries Hiring for Government Affairs Specialist at Folsom, NJ Full Time

Position Summary:

The Government Affairs Specialist at South Jersey Industries will successfully execute strategies to develop beneficial relationships in support of corporate business and revenue priorities. This specialist will provide support for broad-based, front-line representation of SJI subsidiaries in state and local government affairs and community-based organizations. The Government Affairs Specialist will also be responsible for corporate charitable and civic contributions and sponsorships. This specialist reports to the Director of Government Affairs, and collaborates with Communications, Rates and Regulatory, Environmental, Marketing, Sales and Energy Efficiency teams, among others, to drive governmental initiatives in support of corporate strategic goals. Additionally, this specialist will engage with municipal- and county-level elected officials, local government staff, and identified community leaders as needed, in support of corporate priorities that enhance business development and revenue opportunities. Location:

This position is managed as Hybrid with flexibility, and can sit out of either our Union, NJ (Northeast Jersey) or Folsom, NJ (South Jersey) office. This position will involve travel to the municipalities we serve (Southern New Jersey, Union County, NJ, and Northwest Jersey) as well as to Trenton, NJ.

Essential Functions:

• Support government affairs liaisons that manage relationships between SJI, its regulated businesses, and the municipalities they serve
• Provide daily oversight of and manage budgets for corporate strategic giving and grant programs
• Coordinate sponsorships and opportunities for corporate recognition that support positive relationships, performing the logistical tasks necessary to facilitate this recognition (i.e., event attendance coordination, banner or ad recognition, speaking opportunities, panel participation, etc.)
• Assist Operations staff with the local government outreach required to achieve goals
• Represent SJI subsidiaries in meetings and forums throughout the State, providing follow-up communication with management and internal staff as appropriate
• Identify community concerns and establish a basis for dialogue and productive working relationships
• Develop and implement communication initiatives that direct specific outreach at targeted communities in support of corporate priorities
• Produce reports and updates to help keep clients apprised of regulatory and governmental initiatives and guidelines that impact them

Qualifications:

Required Skills:

• Proficient knowledge of local and state government outreach and communications
• Exceptional understanding of NJ State Legislature process
• Talented with computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Consistent, reliable transportation for travel to events and off-site meetings
• Superb verbal and written communication skills and outstanding public speaking abilities
• A self-starting, “can-do” attitude, with intrinsic curiosity and a desire to grow

Preferred Skills:

• Capabilities obtained from direct work experience in governmental, political, and/or public affairs or relations
• Demonstrated network of local government contacts in New Jersey
• Knowledge of utilities industry and energy issues

Required Background:

• Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Communications, or a related field, with 0-2 years of related experience
• Additional work experience may be considered in lieu of degree

Pay: $55,000.00 – $70,000.00 per year
