The Department of Economics
and Business at Southwestern University invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor of Economics positions
beginning August 2024. Successful candidates will teach our Principles of Economics course, in our First-Year Seminar program, and offer
upper-level courses in Economics that would have broad appeal to majors in Business and in Economics. Those may include but are not limited
to International Economics, Environmental Economics, and Development. In addition, each candidate needs to speak to their interest in
teaching either Intermediate Macroeconomics or Finance. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate
teaching and a willingness to foster undergraduate research through supervising students on empirical projects as part of independent
studies, honors and capstone projects. Candidates are also encouraged to demonstrate their experience or interest in connecting their
research and teaching to other disciplines or to our existing interdisciplinary programs (Data Analytics, International Studies,
Environmental Studies, Feminist Studies, and Race and Ethnicity Studies.) Our programs aim to develop skills in data analysis and,
therefore, applicants should have an empirical research agenda using applied econometric methods. An active research program is critical.
The typical teaching load is five courses per year. Campus-wide responsibilities include advising students and university service.
The Economics and Business Department and Southwestern University are committed to recruiting candidates who both excel
in teaching and research/creative work and can best serve our diverse student population. As of the fall 2022 semester, 36% of students
enrolled at Southwestern are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education and we are committed to further increasing
and supporting the diversity of our students, faculty and curriculum. The Department seeks candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to,
and will take an active role in, enhancing diversity, inclusion, and equity across the University, including fostering a sense of community
and belonging for students. In your application materials, please include specific and detailed information about how you have worked to
enhance diversity and inclusion through your teaching practices, research, and/or service experiences within the college or university
setting.
To apply, candidates should submit the following materials through Interfolio http://apply.interfolio.com/134064:
● a cover letter that speaks to
their desire to teach in a liberal arts setting
● a curriculum vitae
● a job market paper
● a brief statement of
teaching philosophy including a statement of how you plan to engage a diverse student population
● a list of courses you are
interested in teaching
● teaching evaluations, if available
● a research statement including how undergraduates can be
involved in your research
● three confidential letters of reference (letter writers will receive an email allowing them to directly
upload the letter into Interfolio); at least one of the reference letters should address teaching aptitude.
Email and paper
applications will not be accepted. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to those received before November
15. We will interview candidates starting on January 3 to coincide with the ASSA Annual Meeting.
