Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of High School supplemented by six months of
experience in housekeeping or laundry. Requires working knowledge of routine tasks commonly found in the area assigned.
Requires skill in the basic operation machinery and equipment found in the assigned area. Requires ability to instruct others
in simple methods and procedures_ Common to the area. Requires abilitl to read, write and speak English language.
Requires ability to perform heavy physical work. Prefers honorable discharge from U.S. armed forces.
Under direct supervision, performs routine, repetitive institutional-type housekeeping and laundry tasks to
maintain the cleanliness and sanitary conditions required by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH)
and Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) without close supervision and receives increasingly complex duties operating
and maintaining standard equipment, completes simple clerical records pertaining to work activities; assists
with training of other workers.
1. Performs routine, repetitive institutional-type housekeeping and laundry tasks to maintain the
cleanliness and sanitary conditions required by IDPH and IDVA without close supervision and
receives increasingly complex duties operating and maintaining standard equipment; provides the
services required to maintain the residential and nursing areas. Sweeps, dry and wet mops, strips,
waxes, and buffs hard surfaced floors. Cleans and disinfects walls, furniture, mirrors, wheelchairs,
toilet fixtures, bathing or shower areas and its equipment, ventilation grills, fans, light fixtures, lifting
equipment and drinking fountains; monitors floor conditions and spot mops soiled or wet areas;
cleans dining areas after morning and noon meals
2. Maintains adequate amounts of paper towels, toilet paper, soap, gloves, and lotions to serve
residents and staff. Replaces plastic liners in trash containers as needed. Removes ordinary trash
from local wastebaskets and puts it into the outdoor garbage containers. Packages bags or
containers classified as Infectious Medical Waste for pickup by a disposal contractor. Collects soiled
linen and personal clothing from local containers and delivers it to the laundry area.
3. Removes and replaces curtains, drapes, and venetian blinds. Cleans and disinfects containers for
trash, linen, and personal clothing. Cleans windows, refrigerators, ovens, toasters, dusts, and
polished furniture. Cleans common usage outside areas; shovels snow from emergency exits and
sidewalks as directed by the supervisor.
4. Collaborates with the Activity Department for group activities by providing tables and the cleanup of
garbage from the activities. Promptly reports supply shortages and equipment problems or repairs
needed to the supervisor. Completes simple, written reports, log sheets and compliance checklists
pertaining to work activities; assists with training of other· workers.
5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties
enumerated above.
