Essential Duties or Responsibilities:
Hospital Patient Treatment Security 45%
Monitors patient movements to ensure patients do not enter unauthorized areas.
Coordinates and communicates with hospital staff when a patient is identified as being on Unauthorized Leave. Coordinates searches for missing patients as needed.
Provides a physical presence on each treatment unit to assess the safety and security of the unit, visitors, staff, and patients.
Assists unit staff with Crisis Interventions to provide protection for both patients and staff. Maintains therapeutic relationships to the greatest extent possible.
Transports patients as needed in the absence of the assigned Teamsters.
Utilizes appropriate and approved methods of managing combative patients.
Maintains confidentiality related to patient information and medical records to ensure the rights of past / present patients is maintained.
Complies with Department, Division, Unit policies and supervisory instructions and expectations. Consults as required with supervisors to obtain clarification or address concerns ensuring provision of appropriate patient care and treatment.
Keeps supervisor informed of all areas concerning patient/staff safety and involvement, observed safety violations and resolutions and any pertinent information regarding the safety and security of all persons and campus properties.
Carries out other duties as assigned or directed.
Campus Security 45%
Protects and provides security for state property and buildings.
Investigates the presence of strangers and/or strange vehicles on campus to determine validity of presence.
Assists visitors and vendors with locating buildings or treatment units by giving directions or escorting them as needed.
Provides assistance and investigation of campus motor vehicle accidents and ensures appropriate notification measures are provided to law enforcement officials.
Makes regular and routine patrols of entire campus, including the monitoring of housing units and patient group homes.
Conducts safety and security tours of the F-Wing in Galen as directed.
Collaborates with local law enforcement officials when assistance is required in enforcement of traffic laws or other situations that require the presence of law enforcement.
Monitors and enforces campus speed limits, parking violations and makes appropriate notifications.
Responds to all alarms throughout the main campus and F-Wing in Galen as requested to ensure safety of all persons and buildings on campus.
Has clear communication with supervisory managers.
Carries out other duties as assigned.
Team and Administrative Functions 10%
Maintains a computerized security log on each shift, recording all incidents in detail to provide a complete, permanent, legal, and accurate record of all security activities.
Conducts and inspection of assigned State vehicles and reports any discrepancies observed along with requesting a Work Order be submitted to correct the discrepancy.
Completes Rounding Logs for all locations on campus.
Collaborates to provide assistance or physical presence to collect evidence pertinent to conducting hospital investigations.
Prepares and submits written reports summarizing involvement in Hospital events as needed or requested.
Provides staff training of safety procedures and techniques as needed or required.
Complies with MSH and DPHHS policies and procedures, Quality Assurance Division (QAD) Licensure, and Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) Certification Standards.
Protects, cares for and is responsible for State equipment.
Is expected to have a work ethic and moral character beyond reproach. Is well knowledgeable with all related MSH and DPHHS policies and enforces the same.
Completes other duties as assigned.
Shift: After orientation and initial training (aprox. 3 weeks) the permanent schedule will be 3 to 11 pm on 5 consecutive work days followed by 2 days off (days TBD upon hire).
Physical and Environmental Demands: Security staff provide duties on all hospital properties. Position duties may require interaction with persons who pose unpredictable and physically aggressive behavior requiring staff intervention and possible risk of injury to staff. Security staff is expected to assist with patient crisis interventions. Training in hospital approved intervention techniques (MANDT) is required. Maintaining a physical standard.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of relevant equipment and procedures utilized to ensure safety and security in a mental health facility.
Knowledge of current techniques in working with and treating the mentally ill.
Knowledge of interviewing and information gathering techniques.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Ability to make observations to report and record them accurately.
Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to monitor and analyze information, events, or the environment to assess and resolve a variety of situations and circumstances.
Ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective relationships with staff, patients, other agencies, and the public.
Ability operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete the essential functions including using word processing, e-mail, and computer programs relevant to their duties.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications (Education and Experience):
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of two years working as a psychiatric technician or similar work experience with security and mentally ill patient treatment functions.
Must maintain CPR Certification.
Must have a current and valid Driver’s License.
Must obtain a valid Montana Driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Must meet a maximum completion time of 6 minutes 30 seconds in the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT)
