The Ohio Department of Agriculture is currently seeking candidates for a Chemical Laboratory Supervisor 1 position in theConsumer Protection Laboratory, PDP, FIFRA & Hemp Sections.The duties for the Chemical Laboratory Supervisor 1position include but are not limited to:
- Supervises laboratory scientists & other laboratory personnel assigned to Pesticide Residue/Formulation, Pesticide Data Program (PDP) and Hemp sections of the Ohio Department of Agricultures (ODA) Consumer Protection Laboratory (CPL)
- Directs staff in testing & related activities
- Ensures timely & accurate analyses of samples submitted to the laboratory
- Reviews, evaluates, & reports results of analyses generated by section personnel
- Develops laboratory policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Coordinates compilation of laboratory data
- Prepares periodic & special reports summarizing progress & effectiveness of program activities
- Evaluates training needs & directs staff training
- Provides staff guidance & counseling as needed
- Assists in design, review, & implementation of programs to provide pesticide & chemical residue analyses on a state-wide basis for various needs (e.g. monitor food safety, human & animal toxicology, compliance monitoring, compliant response, & emergency response)
- Implements & coordinates grant activities (e.g., FDA, USEPA, & USDA) with the CPL Administrator and works with other ODA divisions regarding laboratory operations
- Performs & oversees chemical tests (e.g., tests of existing and new chemicals that require new procedures & method development)
- Maintains standards & assists in coordinating with federal &/or state agencies (e.g., USEPA, USDA, FDA) in developing state-of-the-art methods for chemical analyses
- Evaluates test results & prepares written reports
- Assists in planning & implementing laboratory quality assurance program as required by various sources (e.g., federal guidelines, contractual obligations, & good laboratory practices)
- Implements policies and procedures according to the Standards Organization (i.e., ISO 17025) for different programs such as USDA PDP and USEPA Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, & Rodenticide ACT (FIFRA) and programs from ODA divisions
- Develops procedures for complex ultra-trace chemical analysis of pesticides, hemp related analytes, industrial pollutants, & other types of residual contaminates
- Oversees USDA and FDA Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) chemistry program in coordination with the CPL Administrator, the Principal Investigator and FERN analysts
- Advises & assists in budget preparation and test prices
- Orders supplies & equipment
- Maintains inventory & records
- Acts as a consultant for various interest groups (e.g., industry, consumers, & governmental agencies)
- Coordinates activities & functions of Pesticide/Hemp section with other work groups (e.g., other work units within CPL, other ODA divisions, local health districts; state & federal agencies)
- Travels to attend meetings, seminars, & training courses to maintain professional status
- Evaluates and completes analysts performances annually
- Provides expert testimony in court
- Approves Kronos Time off requests, OT and timecards bi-weekly
Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be set at the lowest rate of the salary range. In most cases successful employees will move up a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year as supported by successful performance.
