State of South Carolina Hiring for Older Blind Counselor at Horry County, SC Full Time

Responsibilities Of Counselor

• Determines eligibility, designs and implements specialized programs of independent living services for the older blind in a multi-county district. Coordinates community resources to meet consumer needs. Provides appropriate independent living services to include counseling, low vision assessments, and adjustment training for consumers and their families.
• Plans and implements individual plans for independent living (IPIL) to include counseling and adjustment to blindness services. Coordinates necessary community resources and services.
• Evaluates accumulated diagnostic information including interviewing consumers and their families to determine eligibility for services. Assessment includes visual functional level of skills for daily living, social and familiar factors.
• Performs effective and appropriate case management tasks; including documentation in hard case file and Agency case management database. Adheres to all state and federal guidelines.
• Provides consultation to other professionals regarding vision related services. Develops joint initiatives and collaborations within the community regarding eye diseases, aging, and specialized adaptations for the blind.
• Supervises various community volunteers, interns, and students in the rehabilitation process.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree and professional experience in human services or social services programs.

Additional Requirements

Considerable knowledge of the ability to work with older adults with disabilities. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.

Ability to perform duties under limited supervision. Supervisor is available on a routine basis by telephone or e-mail.

Employee will be responsible for meeting all designated productivity standards in a quality manner with minimal supervision. Travel may be required and occasional overnight stays may be required. May be required to lift, pull, push, or carry up to 25lbs.

Employee must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, consumers, and the public. Under limited supervision, employee performs work independently and maintains the principals, practices and policies of the SC Commission for the Blind.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in blind rehabilitation and/or aging services is highly desirable but not required.
