Position Summary
Laboratory Aides assist technicians and pathologists in a hospital clinical laboratory, a medical research laboratory or in a morgue by performing a variety of semi-skilled routine tasks and/or clerical duties under direction to assist medical staff in making or confirming diagnosis to assist research staff in their work.
Duties of a Laboratory Aide may include the following but are not limited to:
- Performs specimen receiving, patient registration, test ordering/accessioning and other related functions on physician requested Lyme Disease tests via the hospital and laboratory information computer system applications in an accurate and efficient manner.
- Assists staff technologists in preparing patient specimens for analysis. Tasks can include centrifugation and volume measurement according to established procedures and protocols.
- Will follow all laboratory safety work practices, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment when handling patient specimens.
- Answers the telephone in a professional and courteous manner at all times, relaying messages and providing information on laboratory services, specimen collection requirements and shipping instructions to our customers.
- As trained and assigned may perform tasks that assist the technologist in performing laboratory procedures such as the concentrating of body fluids, measurement of specimen volumes, etc.
- Performs a variety of clerical functions including mailing, copying, faxing and printing lab worksheets and pending logs.
- Will assist in the inventory control process and the washing of glassware and other related duties as assigned.
- Can assist in the training of new employees in appropriately similar job titles as assigned.
Qualifications
Required: No minimum education or experience requirements.
Preferred: High School Diploma; thorough understanding/education in the basics of medical terminology; documented experience working in a health care setting (such as a hospital or doctor’s office) in a clerical or medical assistant role; successfully completed and graduated from a medical assistant program; documented experience and problem solving skills performing patient registration/accessioning/test ordering on a hospital information system (HIS) and/or laboratory information system (LIS); documented experience providing customer service in a health care setting.

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes “continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Candidates who are not already partially vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine’s Employee Health Services*
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
