The Controller serves as the day-to-day leader of the accounting team. The ideal candidate will have proven business experience as an accountant, preferably in a senior role. In addition to solid technical skills, the ideal candidate will have strong communication skills. The Controller is expected to identify important trends and events as they occur and bring those items to the attention of the senior management team. The ideal candidate will be able to produce a variety of financial-status reports to assist senior management in improving operational efficiencies and managing growth. The Controller will report directly to the Vice President.
Key Responsibilities:
· Leads the accounting team on a day-to-day basis. Oversees the Transactional Accounting Specialist and Accounts Receivable & Billing Specialist to ensure that all transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
· Answers technical accounting questions and provides guidance on financial reporting issues.
· Oversees direct reports on the preparation of monthly financial statements with a goal of closing each month by the 5th day of the following month. Ensures that critical G/L accounts are reconciled regularly.
· Proactively identifies key business trends and important financial developments as they occur, and brings them to the attention of senior management in a timely manner. Follows up with management to verify that they have the facts they need to make sound decisions.
· Liaises with banking partners.
· Monitors cash balances and any significant changes in financial results / balance sheet accounts on a regular basis to verify that the Company complies with any bank or loan covenants that may exist.
· Manages treasury functions and continuously forecasts cash flow on a weekly (13 weeks) and monthly basis.
· Improves the quality of the financial information generated by the accounting software.
· Works with department heads and senior management to create annual budgets and rolling 12-month forecasts.
· Creates easy-to-understand reports on a monthly basis to help management compare actual operating results to budgets, forecasts, and other stated goals. Works with management to interpret monthly variances and makes recommendations when needed. Partners with management to develop insights and learnings that can be applied to future decisions. Works with management to project year-end operating results as part of the monthly review of financial statements.
· Provides a variety of other financial reports and projections to support daily operations and long-term strategic plans.
· Reviews accounting controls regularly and suggests improvements when needed. Communicates with management at least annually on how accounting controls help to mitigate certain business risks and can improve the profitability of the Company.
· Works with tax accountants on the preparation of quarterly and year-end tax returns. Maintains electronic permanent files with supporting documentation.
Skills and Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
· 5+ years of proven accounting experience including 2+ years in a senior position.
· Experience managing others or leading teams.
· Professional accounting certification preferred. CPA highly preferred.
· Strong working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, internal controls and banking.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills.
· Strong financial analysis skills.
· Experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
