Summary
The Center for Statistical Genetics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health is looking for a Bioinformatics-Computational Biologist Senior to join our highly interactive research team.
You will join a highly interactive research team in the Center for Statistical Genetics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Our team is currently leading efforts to improve studies of health and disease through the addition of whole genome sequence data and large scale omics assays. In this role, you will support the integration of array methylation data into studies that already have whole genome sequence data for 1,000s of individuals. You will help analyze and generate resources for some of the largest genetic datasets in the world, totaling petabytes of data and often requiring the development of efficient data processing pipelines using 10,000s of cores, data analysis and visualization tools. This is an opportunity to work in a rewarding research area that always poses new technical and computational problems. You will have the opportunity to author and contribute to high-profile scientific papers.
This position will be centered on analyzing and interpreting from large genomic data sets that combine whole genome sequence data with methylation array data and, potentially, other omic data types.
Responsibilities*
1. Process and quality control omics data for the TOPMed Project, which has already sequenced >125,000 deep whole genomes.
2. Organize omics assays into standard formats, including omics assay results and key meta-data, for sharing with the genomics community.
3. Carry out initial analyses of omics data, combining deep whole genome sequence data and methylation array data to identify key QTLs controlling variation in methylation levels.
4. Support the development of interactive web-tools where users can interact with summary results from your analyses of omics data.
5. Develop pipelines to analyze multi-omic datasets, including methylation, metabolomics, proteomics, and/or RNAseq.
6. Establish and maintain best practices for reproducible bioinformatic analyses.
7. Follow relevant scientific literature to ensure use of optimal methods and understand emerging practices across the field.
8. Contribute to key reports and papers for presentations and publication and present at scientific conferences.
Required Qualifications*
1. Advanced degree in a recognized field of science that is directly related to the duties of this position is preferred. A Bachelors degree and demonstrated experience in the processing and analysis of one or more omics data types is also acceptable.
2. Experience in computational analysis and processing of methylation arrays data and, ideally, other omics data types.
3. Ability to support scientific research programs, by critically reviewing data, documenting analysis and data processing steps.
4. Ability to multi-task, prioritize efforts, and execute independently- and collaboratively developed ideas in a fast-paced environment.
Desired Qualifications*
1. PhD degree preferred.
2. Experience with the analysis of data from high-throughput multi-omic data.
3. Experience with standard bioinformatics software tools and packages.
4. Fluency in understanding code written in multiple languages including Python and R.
5. A solid understanding of statistics and experience in statistical inference.
6. Experience building web applications, web services, and user interfaces using standard software development tools: relational databases, version control systems, front-end Javascript.
7. Experience in cloud computing (GCE or AWS).
8. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with study personnel and coordinate efforts with a diverse group of people.
