School of Design — Graphic Design Fellow
The School of Design at the University of Tennessee Knoxville invites applications for the 2023-2025 Graphic Design Fellowship. The full time, nine-month position, is to be awarded for two years to someone who is at, or near, the beginning of a teaching career. The Fellowship recognizes and fosters emerging design educators whose work shows extraordinary promise for the future of the discipline. This position also offers the opportunity to pursue, or continue, self-driven design research, creative scholarship, or critical projects. The two-year fellowship culminates in a lecture presentation and exhibit of research conducted while at the College of Architecture and Design. The teaching load will be reduced by one course the final semester to allow for the development of the project exhibition and presentation. Appointed at the rank of Lecturer, the Fellow will teach three courses a semester in the freshmen and sophomore curriculum, including one Special Topics course of their interest open to all students across the College of Architecture and Design.
The School of Design sits within the College of Architecture and Design, which includes the Schools of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Landscape Architecture. This position presents a unique opportunity for candidates who have an interest in pursuing an innovative, cross-disciplinary research agenda, with an emphasis on engaged scholarship. We offer a supportive and collegial atmosphere in which designers make a variety of important contributions to research, teaching, and public engagement. The position begins August 1, 2023 and salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. This will be a full-time, non-tenure track appointment.
All faculty in the School of Design have access to the following resources: Print production studio with (2) Riso printers, large format scanner, assorted bindery options, and both large and small format printers; Letterpress Studio housing a Vandercook and Champion press and a large inventory of type; Woodshop and Fabrication Labs with CNC router, 3D printers, laser cutters, and a nine-axis robot; and the Digital Futures Lab, an AR/VR design studio equipped to support both immersive projects and professional audio recording and streaming.
The City of Knoxville is a hidden gem with a beautiful and walkable downtown, active neighborhoods, eclectic cultural activities, and plenty of restaurants and shopping. The Knoxville metropolitan area has a population of more than 857,000 and is located within easy driving distance to Asheville, Atlanta, Nashville, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The School of Design at the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
Eligibility
The Graphic Design Fellow will be an integral member of the School of Design faculty, therefore the candidate should exhibit the following to be considered eligible:
Candidates should have an MFA with a design emphasis, MGD or MDes. Professional experience will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Evidence of experience in a design classroom, or design leadership setting, and a willingness to work within the curriculum.
Demonstrate promise as a future Graphic Design educator and researcher.
