Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to perform a very wide range of patient personal care, diagnostic services, treatment and charting activities in a psychiatric or substance abuse treatment unit. The incumbent performs duties in such a way as to encourage patient efforts towards goals for recovery and maintain a safe an therapeutic environment while promoting a sense of worth and dignity for the patient. The incumbent provides personal nursing care to substance abuse and psychiatric patients, and serves as an active, participating member of the health care team. The objectives for care are set in the treatment plan as established by the multidisciplinary treatment team.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment, instruments and monitors.
- Maintains a therapeutic and safe ward by identifying, reporting and eliminating potential hazards.
- Assists with physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of clients receiving medical care for psychiatric or substance abuse treatment.
- Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting to RN deviations in vital signs/withdrawal symptoms, collecting and labeling specimens for the laboratory.
- Demonstrates acceptable behavior as a role model for patient behavior.
- Secures patient confidence and cooperation during hospital stay, including explaining procedures and guidelines.
- Provides general clerical administrative support coordination work for the unit.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can’t be waived.
The IOR for the GS-06 grade level is: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Required: Applicants must possess the Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (Submit a copy of the certificate with the application)***In addition to meeting IOR, applicants MUST also meet the Minimal Qualification to qualify for this position***You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
- Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
- Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions.
- Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
- Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
- Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
- Proficient in VA computer software systems such as CPRS, VISTA Imaging/capture, and doc manager scanners.
- Possess some knowledge of burning discs and the PACS system.
- Possess the ability to be flexible and take direction efficiently and effectively.
- Possess some background knowledge in direct patient care

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the work places no unusual physical demands on the employee. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items like papers, CD images, supplies, and books.
