A Victim Witness Counselor IV plans, assigns and supervises the day-to-day activities of the victim/witness counseling and assistance program; and assists the Victim/Witness Program Director with program development and other administrative tasks as assigned.
Current Vacancy:
There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, Victim/Witness Division. The position plans, assigns, and monitors the day-to-day operations and activities of the division’s victim/witness programs and supervises of Victim/Witness (VW) Counselors through working supervisors; assists the Victim/Witness Program Director with program development and other administrative tasks as assigned; may work with clients as needed; and performs other duties as required.
The position requires a thorough knowledge of Hawaii court procedures and legal instruments applicable to the division’s programs; Criminal Injuries Compensation Commission rules and regulations; community resource agencies and governmental benefits and services available for victims and witnesses; familiarity with related federal and state laws; ability to intervene in crisis counseling as necessary; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; work under constant time constraints and deadlines; and skills in supervising others, time management, and organization.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with major work in social work, sociology, counseling, psychology or a related field.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Four years of professional (i.e., post-bachelor’s degree, non-clerical) counseling experience in a program which provided social services or mental health services, to include crisis counseling, two of which shall have related to the criminal justice system.
Substitution: A Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a similar closely related degree will substitute for one year of professional counseling experience in a program which provided social services or mental health services, to include crisis counseling. There is no substitution for the specific required professional counseling experience related to the criminal justice system.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of: crisis intervention, counseling, and psycho-therapeutic techniques; interviewing methods and techniques; governmental agencies and community organizations that provide pertinent social services, benefits, and other human resource assistance; court procedures and pertinent legal instruments applicable to the program; and report writing. Additionally, such experience must have demonstrated the ability to: assess the biopsychosocial needs of victims/witnesses of violent crimes; and utilize a wide variety of interviewing techniques, particularly as related to crisis counseling.
DESIRABLE: Supervisory experience or supervisory aptitude/potential
LICENSE REQUIREMENT :
Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment, as required.
