Supports the organizational objective to enhance public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Department of Corrections staff and inmates, by meeting re-entry objectives and by providing effective security, programming, custody and control of adult inmates in a major correctional facility. To support the mission of the centralized mail distribution center to ensure facility safety and security by receiving and inspecting all inmate incoming legal correspondence, books and publications for contraband before forwarding items to the facilities for issuance to the inmate.
Corrections Officers contribute to the agency’s public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates by ensuring effective and safe custody and control along with compliance with policy and procedure. This is successfully accomplished through the use of evidence based practices and principles that enhance effective communication strategies and role modeling as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary teams addressing offender needs. Officers provide security over adult inmates at the institution and while in transport; supervise the daily activities of inmates while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. They interact with the visitors, staff, inmates and public to maintain orderly and secure operations.
The Intelligence Officer provides security and safety of DOC facilities by screening mail and publications for contraband. Ensure the handling of all mail are within applicable federal, state and departmental regulations and procedures. Maintains all related documentation and reports. Investigates all suspicious and/or observations of crimes or violations of laws, rules, regulations and policies; and reports incidents to the Special Operations Drug Task Force Unit and/or Special Investigative Unit as outlined in DOC policy. Assist the Mail Distribution Center Investigator in all security mail-screening operations.
Please Note: All persons that are newly hired, rehired, transferred, promoted, or demoted into a Corrections Officer position must serve a new 12-month probationary period. This excludes current Virginia Department of Corrections security employees possessing an active DCJS Corrections Officer Certification.
