A Wastewater Plant Maintenance Mechanic performs highly skilled and technical work in the major installation, repair, overhaul, inspection and testing of a variety of complex wastewater pumping and treatment plant equipment such as centrifugal and positive displacement pumps; and performs other related duties as required.
Current Vacancy Information:
There are five (5) vacancies with the Department of Environmental Services, Wastewater Treatment & Disposal Division. The positions work under general supervision with substantial latitude for judgement. Performs highly skilled and technical work in the major installation, overhaul, repair, inspection, and operation of a complex variety of equipment and machinery installed in wastewater and storm drain pumping stations, wastewater treatment plants, field installations, tunnels, and/or in a major repair shop utilizing machine and welding shop equipment, requiring diverse knowledge and technical skills. Supervises other employees as assigned; drives a motor vehicle and perform other related duties as assigned.
Special Work Requirements: The complex electrical and mechanical wastewater pumping equipment has a high monetary value and plays an important part in maintaining the health standards of the community. Therefore, negligence due to lack of knowledge and interest and/or indecision in the operation, maintenance or repair of the equipment cannot be tolerated as the health of the community and the life of the operational and maintenance personnel are involved. While operating, erecting, aligning, inspecting, testing, and repairing the wastewater pumping and wastewater treatment equipment, the employee will be constantly exposed to high speed rotating machinery and other electrical equipment, machinery and instruments utilizing dangerous voltages which range from 115 to 11,000 volts. The employee will be exposed to depths, heights, deadly wastewater gases, asphyxiation and contamination from disease bearing wastewater. Employee may work alone at night, holidays, and weekends as required. Works in unfavorable obnoxious, filthy, and hazardous surroundings. Employee needs to be on-call 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position, or which show equivalent competence in the operation, maintenance and repair of large pumping or treatment plant, power plants, marine engine room, or related industrial type equipment.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of the types and functions of machinery and equipment used in sewage pumping stations and treatment plants; practices and procedures used in the operation of pumping and treatment plant equipment; principles and practices of elementary electricity and hydraulics; internal combustion engines; tools, equipment, materials, and practices used in the installation, overhaul and repair of a variety of sewage pumping and treatment plant equipment; uses of tools, materials, and equipment and the terminology and skills used by various specialized trades in mechanical repair work and in a machine and welding shop; and the ability to use a variety of machinist’s and mechanic’s hand tools, equipment, and shop machinery such as drill presses, metal shapers, welding and cutting equipment, lathes, etc., installing overhauling, repairing, and testing a variety of wastewater pumping and treatment plant equipment and make repairs quickly and effectively.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Valid driver’s license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
