Wentworth welcomes applicants for two full-time Assistant/Associate Professors in the Industrial Design program, beginning Fall 2022.
We seek professors with a strong technical background in the realm of the industrial design profession and a firm grasp of contemporary professional practices/methodologies. Additionally, he/she will possess a vision of the future regarding the nature of the profession and design education. Working closely with a small group of faculty, the ideal candidate should be able to incorporate existing program goals while striving to redevelop and refine those goals for improvement of the program. Many of the courses in the program are multi-section and this requires that the candidate has an open approach to collaboration with other faculty to keep pedagogical methods, learning goals, and content delivery in-synch as well as continuously developing, improving, and updating class projects and assignments working within a team.
The candidate should exhibit a combination of capabilities and expertise focused on strong product development capabilities, interdisciplinary professional work, design management skills, entrepreneurial experience, user research and human factors. High level technical proficiency and experience in CAD (Rhino and/or SolidWorks), traditional modelmaking, digital fabrication and knowledge of current manufacturing technologies is a plus.
Studio and Technical courses will have both lecture and lab components fitting with the Institute’s hands-on approach to education. The curriculum requires someone who is fluent with the latest technology and has industry experience working on interdisciplinary design teams and is open to collaboration with other programs in the school of Architecture and Design and the institute at large.
About the School of Architecture and Design:
The School of Architecture and Design comprises faculty in Industrial Design as well as Interior Design, and Architecture. We offer undergraduate programs in all three disciplines and a well-established graduate program in Architecture.
About the Industrial Design Program:
Part of the School of Architecture and Design, the Industrial Design program at Wentworth offers a NASAD accredited program with approximately 200 students enrolled in the program. Wentworth’s Industrial Design Department focuses on preparing students to be thoughtful designers. Classes and core curricula focus on teaching a well-rounded approach to design while developing a student’s ability to ask relevant questions and respond to the world around them. Classroom experiences are complemented by two mandatory co-ops that reinforce coursework and bridge the gap between academia and the profession.
The Industrial Design program at Wentworth Institute of Technology champions hand-building crafts, wood, metal and plastic shop techniques, sketching and illustration methods, as well as CAD and digital technologies. Attention to craft details is paramount. Studio concentrations may include consumer products, education, toys, sports and medical equipment, footwear, housewares and furniture, or exhibit design.

Qualifications:
A terminal degree in Industrial Design, Design, Art or related field (e.g., Master of Design, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, and/or PhD) or equivalent professional experience
Established professional design or research understanding including theory, methods and practice. Prior experience within an educational system is a plus. Successful candidates should also be comfortable engaging, advising, critiquing student work related contemporary industrial design practice.
