DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

University Advancement works with the members of the Board of Directors of both the Stout University Foundation and Stout Alumni Association Boards to cultivate, solicit, and steward private support to meet the mission of the University. For 60 years, the Stout University Foundation has provided support to the University through student scholarships, faculty support, and academic and non-academic programs. Working with University leadership, priorities are identified, and fundraising strategies developed to achieve fundraising goals. With more than 69,000 alumni, the Alumni Association promotes engagement opportunities in a wide variety of programs both on and off campus. Through this engagement, alumni continue to embrace and promote the Polytechnic mission of UW-Stout.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Vice Chancellor for University Advancement and Alumni Relations reports directly to the Chancellor and is a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet. The Vice Chancellor is responsible for development, alumni, and donor relations. The Vice Chancellor will advise the Chancellor and other senior officers of the university on all aspects of development and alumni affairs and will effectively promote internal and external understanding and support of the university’s unique polytechnic mission as correlated with giving and engagement goals. The Vice Chancellor’s primary responsibilities will be to develop and implement university-wide and unit-specific strategies for development and alumni engagement including any comprehensive, project, or program-specific campaigns; to build and lead the necessary infrastructure to support these efforts; to provide the Chancellor and other key internal leaders in their work with top prospects and donors; and to oversee coordination of development and alumni engagement efforts across the university.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic vision for and leadership of the university development plans to enhance the image and understanding of the UW-Stout’s Polytechnic mission, and to increase support for the university in accordance with the mission and strategic plan of the university.
  • Provide advice, counsel and leadership for the Stout University Foundation, and its Board of Directors, committees and affiliated organizations.
  • Participate as an active member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and foster collaboration that supports development efforts and alumni engagement.
  • Plan, develop and implement strategies to solicit and acquire funds for the institution, including annual, planned, and major gift program.
  • Plan and prepare the university and foundation staff for comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
  • Facilitate efforts to increase funding and all other forms of institutional support for the research, instructional programs, and co-curricular programming of the university from public and private foundations and business and corporate partners in conjunction with the University Partnership Council (UPC). Working with the UPC, strengthen and develop new external partnerships to advance the strategic plan of the University.
  • Provide oversight for the donor stewardship program including donor recognition, naming opportunities, event coordination, strategic communication plans, and consistent reporting to donors on the impact of philanthropic giving to the university.
  • Provide advice, counsel, and leadership to the Stout Alumni Association and staff to facilitate development of alumni engagement strategies and programs that promote meaningful alumni engagement with the university, including the alumni annual awards that celebrate professional achievement.
  • Provide guidance in the interpretation of the University of Wisconsin System’s policies and procedures as they apply to the University Foundation and Alumni Association.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the Stout University Foundation and Alumni Association to all departments within the University community.
  • Promote greater awareness of funding and volunteer opportunities within the University at the local, regional, state, and national level.
  • Be an active partner in expanding and developing fundraising plans to increase support from UW-Stout’s external corporate partners.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of fundraising staff who are dedicated to increasing support for all UW-Stout programs including, but not limited to, academic programs, faculty support, athletics, student scholarships and student programs.
  • Supervise the direct accounting, transmittal and acknowledgement process for all gifts and donations to the Foundation. Coordinate the acknowledgement of gifts made directly to the University.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

  • Strengthen a culture of philanthropy among UW-Stout alumni, students, friends, and partners.
  • Expand alumni and student engagement through collaboration with the Alumni Association and staff to develop meaningful programming to track and encourage and increase participation.
  • Establish the infrastructure necessary to successfully support the university’s next comprehensive campaign.
  • Lead efforts to help raise financial support for major capital projects.
  • Develop fundraising initiatives with a goal to increase annual unrestricted support by 5% and a goal to increase unrestricted and restricted support to the Stout University Endowment by 3% annually.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least seven years of professional and progressive fundraising experience
  • Professional working knowledge of university advancement, alumni relations, fundraising and external relations, board management and management principles and best practices
  • A proven track record with direct responsibilities personally cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding major gifts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or terminal academic degree
  • Experience at an institution of higher education
  • Exceptional leadership, fundraising, management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a range of institutional stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and senior administrators, to achieve university priorities and goals
  • Designation as a Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE)
