The Digital Advice Technology (DAT) group manages a suite of Schwab automated investing products, including Schwab Intelligent Portfolios and Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium. We deliver great platforms through teamwork, innovation, and attention to quality in order bring wealth management solutions to more customers. Schwab Intelligent Portfolios is a fully automated investment advisory service with features such as goal tracking, automatic rebalancing, and tax-loss harvesting. Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium is a hybrid advisory service that takes the benefits from Schwab Intelligent Portfolios and adds in financial planning and live credentialed professionals.

DAT is looking for a Lead Database Engineer who will own database design, be an expert in all the data owned by DAT, and prepare or review any significant data related changes. The Lead Database Engineer will work closely with the Business Capability and Platform Capability engineering teams, who develop, test, and release core APIs, workers, databases, and libraries that back the Intelligent Portfolios product offering. This position provides the opportunity to work innovatively and collaboratively with product and technology partners to execute to Schwab’s vision to be the most trusted leader in investment services.

Work closely with Solution Architects, Product Owners, and Engineering Teams to design database solutions that meet client and business needs

Be a subject matter expert (SME) in all the data stored across the various databases leveraged by DAT
Lead technical requirements gathering sessions and produce technical requirements and technical design documents
Influence and socialize a data-centric technical vision and roadmap for the engineering teams by tracking and identifying new technologies to solve existing and new business problems in a practical manner
Build and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with team members and stakeholders
Design for functional and non-functional qualities, including availability, resiliency, security, performance, and privacy
Define, socialize, and enforce data standards and best practices
Provide hands-on, expert level assistance to engineers on data-related issues
Suggest alternative technical solutions to meet client requirements with greater reusability, and reduced maintenance complexity
Present designs and actively participate in architecture governance processes to ensure alignment of projects with enterprise guidance and DAT target state vision

What you have

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a related field
8+ years of database experience, with an emphasis on database design and engineering
Deep experience with SQL and relational database constructs for profiling and analyzing data
Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB
Expertise in schema design and data model creation and evolution
Experience designing large scale databases leveraged by distributed systems
Experience securing information with rights/roles and encryption at rest plus in transit
Experience writing complex database scripts and reviewing scripts with other leads and engineers
Experience and expertise in database administration and performance optimization
Experience leveraging data warehouses or data lakes
Superb attention to detail and pursuit of exceptional quality software solutions
Strong Data Analysis sills
Excellent leadership skills
Ability to effectively persuade and influence all levels of staff through strong collaboration and relationship-building skills
Excellent communication skills (oral and written) for partnering with all technical and non-technical stakeholders
Motivation and passion to stay on top of new and emerging technologies and ability to provide direction to team on technical design and implementation approaches
Experience deploying enterprise databases to public cloud offerings such as GCP, AWS or Azure is a plus
Prior experience with trading systems or financial services experience is a plus
