Independently conducts complete investigations of a confidential nature derived from complaints against the Police Department and its members; interviews witnesses and complainants; determines facts and develops and evaluates evidence; secures information to substantiate findings; prepares comprehensive reports on findings with recommendations; and performs other related duties as required.
Current Vacancy:
There is one (1) vacancy with the Honolulu Police Commission. Work may require entering highly dangerous neighborhoods and being subjected to verbal and physical confrontations with complainants, witnesses, and other individuals. Work schedule varies according to availability of witnesses (may be required to work overtime, including nights, weekends, and holidays). In addition, position requires use of a personal vehicle (will be reimbursed for mileage).

Minimum Qualification Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in social work, sociology, psychology, public administration, or a related field.

Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor’s degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of responsible investigative work experience.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of investigational methods and techniques; rules of legal evidence; interviewing and interrogating methods and techniques; and report writing. Additionally, such experience must have demonstrated the ability to interpret laws, rules, and regulations; and obtain and analyze data. Investigative experience should include the areas of fraud, malfeasance, or other areas of criminal investigation.
Examples of Qualifying Experience: Detectives (criminal investigation), military officers in criminal investigation, insurance investigators, Federal law enforcement officers, or other investigative experience at the independent, responsible level.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1. Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.
(The current vacancy requires a Type 3/automobile license, prior to appointment, and a Notary Public Commission from the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General, prior to completion of probation.)
