Summary:

We’re growing fast and doing especially well with real estate clients.

We’re looking for a Controller or CFO-level accountant to oversee services for RE clients.

What You’ll Do:

After a new real estate client signs up:

• You’ll supervise the initial onboarding process (where we learn about their needs, clean up their books, and set up ongoing services).
• Once everything is up and running for a client, you’ll do some light supervision of the ongoing work.

You’ll act as something close to an outsourced Controller for these clients. However, you won’t do any bookkeeping yourself. Instead, you’ll be more focused on:

• Supervising services
• Advising a team of international bookkeepers internally
• Managing communication and expectations with the client

You won’t have any direct reports to start with. However, since we’re growing fast, there will be plenty of opportunities to step into management roles for those interested.

We’re Looking for Someone Who Is:

• Great at building strong relationships. A key part of the role is to establish a personal rapport with your clients, to get to know them, and to earn their trust. Same goes with your internal bookkeeping team. This all takes an outgoing, positive “people person”.
• Experienced. Our ideal candidate has either held in-house accounting leadership roles (such as CFO, VP of Finance, or Controller) or Senior Accountant type positions in accounting firms. Supervision or management experience is preferred.
• Knowledgeable about Real Estate. You’ll need 2+ years experience handling real estate accounting. You should be ready to oversee accounting for all sorts of RE businesses. short-term and long-term rentals, flips, wholesaling, investments, development, property management, etc. You should be comfortable recording mortgages, purchases and sales, etc. even in relatively complex scenarios. Note: our clients are typically small businesses, but even so, there can be some complexity.
• Highly organized. It’s a juggling act, with multiple clients with different services, goals and personalities.
• Tech-savvy. We’re a technology-forward firm.You will need to be comfortable figuring out new systems and tools. QuickBooks experience is strongly preferred (either Online or Desktop). Experience with other accounting software, such as Xero or NetSuite, is not required but would be helpful. Spreadsheet skills will come in handy. Familiarity with RE & property management apps is a plus (e.g. AppFolio, Yardi, Buildium, Stessa, etc.).
• Comfortable with ambiguity. We need someone who feels very comfortable in situations where there’s no easy way to look up the right answer. Someone who’s happy to dive in and figure things out. If you are happiest just maintaining a well-defined process that someone else established long ago, this is NOT the ideal role for you. If you love looking for creative solutions to new problems all the time, you could be a perfect fit!

Other Details:

Full-Time/Part-Time: Both options available. Full-time preferred. For part-time, a minimum of 25 hours/week is required.

Hours: Your clients are all over the US. Some of your colleagues work in European time zones. To ensure overlap with clients and colleagues, you should at least be available approx. 9-11am Eastern on at least 3 weekdays. The rest of your hours can be quite flexible.

Salary: Negotiable.
