What you will be doing:
This position works under the immediate supervision of a higher-level Engineering Assistant or Engineering Associate, typically assigned to a construction project team. In a training capacity, this position works alongside other project-assigned staff to field inspect, document, and ensure that civil construction contract work meets all specifications, construction drawings and materials-testing requirements for a project. The position assists the Project Engineer in inspection duties, quality, and quantity documentation, preparing contractor pay estimates, reports, written correspondence, and assisting with the project close out documentation. This is a flex position: If the selected candidate is hired as an Engineering Assistant 1, then the incumbent is eligible for promotion to an Engineering Assistant 2 after 12 months as an Engineering Assistant 1 and successful completion of a training plan.

The Department of Transportation’s focus is to “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.” This position plays an important role in ensuring construction contracts are ultimately constructed by private contractors in compliance with all contract provisions and regulatory requirements. The incumbent’s work will benefit the Construction Section by being integral with a team of field staff on construction projects, performing field inspection and documentation duties, and as needed, assisting the project engineer with resolving site issues.

The working environment you can expect:
The office location is 2720 Picket Place in Fairbanks, Alaska. During the summer construction season, the workplace is typically in a project-specific field located at assigned construction project – locations for our Northern Region construction projects are in Fairbanks and throughout Alaska’s Interior. Work includes field engineering tasks on state and federally funded public construction projects. Some projects entail work assignments of up to 6 months at remote or semi-remote locations.

The position-specific competencies that are desired/contribute to success in the position:
Engineering Assistant 1
Bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
Or:
A bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.
Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.
Engineering Assistant 2
Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.
Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 1 or 2 level depending on the applicant’s training and/or experience. Please respond to all the minimum qualification questions. If filled at a lower level, incumbent will have the opportunity to advance to the next level upon management’s assessment that the incumbent is performing adequately and has successfully completed the training plan and meets the minimum qualifications of the higher level.
