Performs skilled automotive maintenance and repairs. The work involves light to heavy maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment. The work requires training in the trade and experience. Work involves rotation to repair a variety of equipment. Work is performed under technical supervision.
Essential Job Functions
Maintains repairs and/or performs preventive maintenance on all County owned and maintained equipment, heavy motor equipment and vehicles.
Performs diagnostics to determine problems and repairs.
Maintains and repairs power saws, power pruners, weedeaters and other equipment assigned to the Highway Maintenance Division.
Supervises and assigns work to other mechanics in the absence of the Equipment Repair Supervisor.
Prepares service/work orders detailing service or repair work performed and parts used in order to bill outside agencies or division budgets as required.
Contacts vendors to order parts, supplies and/or check prices of repair parts.
Operates service truck for road and field calls, to pick up parts and supplies, and to transport vehicles to and from garages for specialized work.
Cleans shops; checks/maintains shop equipment to ensure proper working order.
Rotates assigned workstation to include open bay and service truck to repair a variety of equipment.
Dismounts and mounts of heavy-duty equipment tires.
Other Duties
Operates salt and/or sand loader to load trucks, operates trucks to plow snow and spread salt in snow/ice removal operations.
Assists with storm clean up.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of–
Methods, procedures and techniques of the automotive repair trade.
Tools, materials, equipment and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to–
Perform light to heavy automotive repairs.
Deal effectively with the public.
Use of tools and equipment of the trade.
Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)
Training and/or Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent, including or supplemented by training in automotive and heavy equipment repair.
Experience:
Five years of experience performing maintenance and repair to include three years of experience with maintenance to heavy-duty diesel engines.
Licenses or Certificates:
Valid Class B commercial driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations within six months of employment. Passenger Endorsement may be required.
Special Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age.
Operation of County owned vehicle.
Subject to alcohol and drug testing.
Physical Demands:
Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
Unusual Demands:
Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, and hazards from working with tools and equipment.

Pay rate: $27.01 – $30.99 per hour, $56,181 – $64,459 annually
