Performs moderately difficult fire fighting assignments in a specialized line, support or inspectional activity area; and performs other related duties as required.

If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be conducted by the DHR staff in order for more than one degree to be credited towards the minimum qualification requirements. Additional degrees can be considered if obtained independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being considered. Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant.
Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant’s overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.
License Requirement: At the time of appointment, the candidate selected for hire will need to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; and possess the following valid certifications:

Special Requirement: Certificates earned in conjunction with Fire Fighter training programs must be maintained on a current basis, as applicable and for positions involved in driving fire vehicles, compliance with the requirements of the Kaua’i Fire Department’s driver training program.
Knowledge of: Firefighting and lifesaving principles, practices, methods and operations; the purpose, use, operation and care of assigned equipment; first aid principles, practices and techniques; fire safety, prevention and inspection principles, practices, methods, procedures, codes, rules and laws; geography of the County of Kaua’i; departmental rules, regulations, policies and operating procedures; principles and practices of human and public relations; chemistry of hazardous materials; principles, practices and procedures for identifying, handling and containing hazardous materials; the purposes, uses, operations and care of firefighting, rescue and HAZMAT equipment; the incident command system incorporated by the Fire Department in firefighting, HAZMAT and rescue operation and safety and decontamination practices, rules and regulations.
Ability to: Apply firefighting, lifesaving, search and rescue principles, practices, techniques, tools and equipment to actual situations; work at heights; withstand physical exertion and perform arduous work under adverse conditions; act quickly and effectively in emergencies; read and understand technical materials; understand and follow oral and written instructions; apply hazardous materials, principles, practices, techniques, tools and equipment to actual situations, and operate firefighting, rescue and HAZMAT equipment skillfully and safely.
Tests: Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Special Working Conditions: Irregular hours shift and weekend work, and exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions as required.

Examination: For this recruitment you must qualify on a written test designed to measure your knowledge and skills necessary for satisfactory performance of the duties and responsibilities of this class of work. Fire rescue positions: In addition, you must qualify in a physical agility performance test which consists of the following: 600-meter open ocean swim, treading water, 32-pound sandbag transfer, chin-ups, bent-knee sit-ups and a one and a half-mile run.
NOTE: Candidates must pass ALL EVENTS. If a candidate fails an event, he/she will not be allowed to continue on to the next event.
