We are seeking an experienced Legal Clerk to support the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO), Northern District of Georgia (NDGA). Your scope of work includes providing direct legal support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs), preparing and processing complex legal documents, coordinating with victim/witness specialists, and ensuring adherence to Department of Justice (DOJ) guidelines.

Responsibilities

I. Legal Document Preparation & Management:

• Examine, prepare, and process complex legal documents
• Review incoming material to determine the need for legal document preparation (e.g., motions, orders, etc.)
• Obtain information and submit legal documents to AUSA or the court
• Consider the nature and the status of the case involved in the preparation of documents
• Prepare legal actions (e.g., answers, deposition notices, discovery requests, discovery responses, etc.)
• Complete variable aspects of recurring legal documents in conformance with the rules governing their style and format
• Develop tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established format
• List cited cases, opinions, and miscellaneous references in briefs
• Compose letters requiring knowledge of legal procedures and terminology
• Transmit pleadings, discovery requests, discovery responses, subpoena requests, and requests for extensions of time in certain cases
• Advise on case developments and notify defense attorneys
• Perform docketing duties through use of the automated case tracking system (e.g., opening, updating, closing cases)
• Enter information into various databases and monitor for continued necessity
• Save pleadings, correspondence, and other case-related documents to the case file (both electronic and physical)
• Notify agency counsel of all pleadings
• Open and close cases

II. Trial Preparation & Support:

• Provide trial prep assistance by compiling trial notebooks, witness/exhibit lists, and assembling jury instructions
• Coordinate with victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to victims’ rights guidelines
• Notify appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues
• Use original and online legal resources to verify citations and statutory references contained in legal documents
• Ensure citations are complete and consistent with source material
• Provide automated litigation assistance during litigation and in trial preparation and courtroom presentations
• Prepare documents, charts, and visual materials for use in trials
• Provide technical support (e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits)
• Submit requests to Litigation Support as needed

III. Clerical/Administrative Support:

• Provide a variety of direct legal support assistance services to serviced AUSA staff
• Receive visitors and telephone callers, provide directions to office, advice about parking and hotels, etc
• Work with U.S. Marshals to obtain authorization for visitors to bring electronic equipment into the building
• Furnish information about pending and closed matters/cases, functions, and general procedures of the office
• Determine which matters should be referred to the AUSA and the urgency of the matter
• Schedule depositions, conference rooms, and court reporters
• Coordinate all matters associated with the scheduling of depositions
• Establish and maintain a variety of files
• Search legal reference files for information needed by AUSAs in conducting interviews and preparing correspondence
• Assemble exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents from file material
• Separate, screen, and select files and records material for disposition
• Assemble and organize files for transfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures
• Search database for required information as necessary
• Review bills and invoices and submit them to the budget office for payment
• Handle budget items, including litigation obligations, expert contracts, and invoices
• Maintain calendar of assigned active cases
• Track filing, hearing, and trial dates, and schedule conferences and interviews
• Develop and maintain a suspense system for ongoing cases and inform the AUSA of pending dates and deadlines
• Maintain calendar(s) of the AUSA(s), schedule appointments, interviews, and conferences
• Provide reminders of commitments and court appearances
• Arrange travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations
• Prepare travel authorizations and vouchers for traveler signature and Government approval
• Handle requests for reimbursement of travel expenses

IV. Documentation & Presentation:

• Produce a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications
• Integrate tables, charts, and graphs from various software into documents
• Create complex tables, graphs, and charts for legal documents and presentations
• Ensure proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar

V. Training & Miscellaneous Tasks:

• Provide training to other legal support as needed
• Send call letters and requests for litigation reports to agencies and Main Justice
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of legal procedures and terminology preferred
• Knowledge of legal software preferred (e.g., eScanIt, Everlaw, etc.)
• Strong communication, clerical, and organizational skills

BACKGROUND

• Exp. in working within a legal setting preferred
• Exp. preparing legal documents, conducting legal research, and with trial support preferred
• Exp. in administrative work preferred
