A Recreation Specialist I organizes and directs a city-wide program in a recreational specialty; conducts in-service training classes in the specialized activity; and performs other related duties as required.
Current Vacancy Information:
There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division. This position is located in Honolulu at the Koko Head Shooting Complex and is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the Koko Head Shooting Range by supervising, coordinating and directing the activities at the range.
This position is a Lautenberg position and must comply with the provisions of the September 20, 1996 amendment known as the Lautenberg Amendment to the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 (FGCA). The amendment prohibits the City from allowing any person(s) convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence to have access to carry and/or possess a firearm and ammunition as part of their job duties.
Special Work Requirements: Will work weekends and holidays, may work evenings. Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies. Must be qualified to possess, carry and/or have access to firearms and ammunition in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, group work, or a related field.
Work experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor’s degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Two (2) years of professional (post-bachelor’s degree, non-clerical) recreation experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing a comprehensive firearms range program.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of policies, principles, plans, tools and techniques of recreation; instructional methods, plans, procedures, and techniques; group behavior; principles and practices of supervision; policies, principles, plans, tools and techniques of the specialty area of recreation. Additionally, such experience must have demonstrated the ability to plan, organize, promote, administer and evaluate recreational activities and programs.

Convictions of domestic violence preclude incumbents from carrying firearms and ammunition. The City & County of Honolulu (City) is required by the Lautenberg Amendment to the Federal Gun Control Act to insure that any City employee who has been convicted of a domestic violence crime does not have access to, carry, and/or possess any firearm or ammunition as part of his/her job duties.
