This position requires a valid Class A driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: * three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a CDL, applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Supervises employees spending majority of their time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employees’ work. Includes the development, coordination, and participation in the roadside maintenance program. Assist the Maintenance Field Operations Manager in work need surveys by conducting routine highway maintenance inspections. Select materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization for employees. Train crew members in the proper identification and inspection of defective areas. Provide technical assistance and instruction on roadside defects and determine corrective action required. Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
Maintain records of operation. Prepare and maintain daily paperwork such as crew activity s, work orders and daily vehicle check lists. Complete s and documents required for safety issues, personnel matters, and equipment usage and repair.
Upon obtaining the required CDL Instructional Permit or License, operate vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment. Perform preventative maintenance and pre-trip inspections on equipment. Perform light maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment; assist in the repair of equipment; check fluids and add as needed to maintain proper fluid levels; ensure maintenance of proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Perform manual labor in the maintenance of highways, and other highway facilities while utilizing a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools.
Perform temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic) and provide instruction on the basics of temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic).
Interpret the Maintenance Management System Standards and select the most efficient and productive means of performing assigned work, the Florida Department of Transportation Loss Prevention Procedures and be aware of reducing personal injury and vehicle accidents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: BASIC MATHEMATICAL PRINCIPLES AND CALCULATIONS; STANDARD SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS; PROCEDURES, TECHNIQUES, USE OF EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS ASSOCIATED IN THE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF HIGHWAYS AND OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES; MAINTENANCE RATING PROGRAM; SKILLED IN: THE OPERATION OF A VARIETY OF POWER TOOLS, HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES; COMMUNICATING VERBALLY AND IN WRITING; ABILITY TO: PERFORM PRE-AND POST-TRIP INSPECTIONS REQUIRED FOR COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLES WITH A GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT (GVW) OF 26,000 POUNDS OR MORE; SUPERVISE EMPLOYEES EFFECTIVELY; COMPLETE S AND FORMS AND MAINTAIN ACCURATE RECORDS; TRAIN AND INSTRUCT CREW MEMBERS; DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS; DETERMINE WORK PRIORITIES, PLAN, ORGANIZE, AND COORDINATE WORK ASSIGNMENTS TO ENSURE PROPER COMPLETION OF WORK ASSIGNMENTS; WORK INDEPENDENTLY AND MAKE JOB RELATED DECISIONS.
OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: A valid Class xe2x80x9cAxe2x80x9d Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at time of hire. Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be xe2x80x9con callxe2x80x9d (24 hour duty) when necessary. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must also be trained and must maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates. Obtains and maintains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
