Salary:
Vector Control Worker I – $3,936 per month (BC-03)
Vector Control Worker II – $4,258 per month (BC-05)

Duties Summary
The Vector Control Program is responsible for suppressing outbreaks of potential vector-borne diseases, preventing encroachment of new vectors and vector-borne diseases from abroad, and providing relief to the public from severe vector nuisances.
Positions in this occupational field perform work in the surveillance and abatement of vectors such as rats, mosquitoes, mongooses, and other small animals and insects which impair public health and well being by transmitting diseases.
Level I positions receive formal classroom training in the life cycle and habits of vectors, vector control methods, pesticide application and calibration procedures. Positions also perform work as a member of a crew to receive on-the-job training in conducting vector control surveillance and abatement activities.
Level II positions independently conduct vector control surveillance and abatement activities following standard methods and procedures. Positions perform work alone in the field or may perform work as a member of a team when hazardous and unsafe field conditions exist. The work involves the assessment of breeding sources for degrees of vermin infestation and related factors such as terrain, water, plant vegetation, weather, and proximity of livestock animals and neighboring communities; and selection of the appropriate vector control measure, and the safe and correct application of chemical and/or biological control agents.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants will be placed on the eligible list for ALL levels for which they are qualified.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Prerequisite Abilities for Level I:
Ability to: Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions; learn and apply the vector control methods and techniques, including safe use of pesticides such as insecticides, rodenticides, herbicides and other substances; perform simple arithmetic computations including multiplication and division; perform manual work tasks; operate a light truck; lift and carry, with the assistance of one other person, containers of mosquito fish weighing up to one hundred twenty (120) pounds.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Abilities Required for Level II:
Knowledge of: Effectiveness of methods and materials in various vector control situations; classification, function, toxicity and use of pesticides (e.g. insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, larvicides, adulticides, etc.); methods and techniques of pesticides application; tools and equipment used in vector control work and their proper maintenance; calibration principles and procedures; habits of rodents and small mammals; life cycle of mosquitoes; and hazards and safety procedures, practices and precautions applicable to performance of vector control work.
Ability to: In addition to the abilities required for Level I above, applicants must also have the ability to conduct vector control surveillance and abatement activities in accordance with standard methods and procedures; read and understand pesticide labels and vector control program policies and procedures; calibrate pesticide application equipment; utilize personal protective equipment; and fill out appropriate report forms.
General Experience: All applicants must possess work experience which demonstrated the ability to read and follow oral and written instructions and perform simple arithmetic computations including multiplication and division, or graduation from high school or equivalent.
Specialized Experience: No experience for Level I, and for Level II, one (1) year of work experience in the field of vector control which involved the application of various mechanical, chemical and biological measures to control vectors. The work experience must have included the mixing and applying of pesticides in field operations to abate infestations of vectors such as insects, rodents and small mammals; and operation and calibration of various application tools and equipment.
Special Requirement: All applicants must possess the Department of Transportation (DOT), Airports Division, Airport Motor Vehicle Operator’s permit within the six months probationary period.
Certification Requirement: None for Level I, and for Level II, applicants are required to qualify for Department of Agriculture Certificate for Commercial Applicators of Restricted Pesticides within the six months probationary period.
