Job Description Summary:
Under general supervision, this position supports the management and restoration of undesignated (social) trails on OSMP-managed properties. They coordinate projects and lead the work of OSMP staff, volunteers, and/or youth corps performing a variety of tasks related to restoring undesignated (social) trails and/or constructing new trails to designate undesignated trails. Additionally, the crew lead will monitor previous restoration work, plan and map new restoration work, and independently complete restoration work. Tasks may include but are not limited to trail construction, planting and watering, seeding, installing erosion control, fencing installation and deconstruction, chainsaw/heavy equipment operation, monitoring previous restoration sites, writing reports, and using GIS applications.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Project and Personnel Management (50%)
Assigns, coordinates, and directs employees and other agency staff, youth corps. crews and/or volunteers in managing undesignated trails, through restoration or designation
Completes projects using hand tools or heavy equipment
Provide field support, training, and comprehensive performance evaluations to crew
Conduct daily safety briefings and complete safety logs.
Mentoring Staff
Develop and facilitate on-the-job tool training, leadership, and team development activities to crews and other agency partners
Deliver instruction on specialized skills such as trail construction, restoration, and mechanized equipment.
Openly shares successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth.
Planning, Reporting, and Communications (40%)
Works independently to assess and prioritize restoration needs
Performs research and/or monitoring of restoration projects and/or techniques and prepares related documents or reports
Maintains detailed records of restoration, treatments, and resources utilizing asset management software.
Maintain regular communication on status of projects with project managers and supervisors
Communicate project timeline, deliverables, and progress to project managers and supervisors
Maps and logs current and future work efforts using GPS applications
Other (10%)
Works with other work groups on specific projects or as cross-training opportunities
Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

Skill and knowledge in written and oral communication: Develop and relay daily work plans to crews and partners to ensure that directions and expectations of quality are being met. Listens to concerns and is open to the ideas of colleagues. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers, with excellent customer service skills.
Ability to have integrity: Represent the City of Boulder and Open Space and Mountain Parks with integrity when interacting with the public and project partners.
Skill and knowledge in safety: Ability to perform risk and hazard analysis and implement proper safety controls; ability to judge weather conditions. Adheres to department and program policies regarding safety.
Skill in project management: Familiar with project management and variables involved including time, resources, standards, and responding to unexpected events. Ability to recognize needs, assess possible methods to meet needs, and act on solutions.
Driver’s license and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Acceptable background information including criminal history is required.
One season of experience supervising work crews completing natural resource management or land management field tasks or equivalent experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to operate and use specialized equipment including trail dozers, excavators, power carriers, gas powered rock drills/breakers, winch and rigging equipment, chainsaws, grinders and sharpening tools, etc.
Skill in Instructing or Mentoring
Technical and functional skills: Knowledge and experience with using and repairing hand tools, power tools, and/or heavy equipment common to the trade. Experience with GIS software and applications. Experience completing field work in any land management setting. Familiarity with Colorado plant species.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Two years of experience directing the work of peers, volunteers, or crews.
