The Supervising Combination Inspector plays an important role in the Community Development Department assisting with the day-to-day management and oversight of the City’s building inspection program. The successful candidate will have strong problem-solving skills to foster partnerships between the City and development teams to successfully navigate the building inspection process utilizing creative solutions to solve inspection related issues in accordance with all codes and standards. The Supervising Combination Inspector operates in a fast-paced environment ensuring the City’s building inspection program operates efficiently through the management of a diverse team of inspectors. The successful candidate will also play a critical role as the liaison between the Building & Life Safety Division and the City’s Code Enforcement Department assisting on joint inspections, preparation of notices, and providing expert testimony of building related deficiencies.
The regular work hours for the position are 6:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Thursday and 7:00am to 3:30pm on Fridays with alternating Fridays off. The position requires regular and sometimes frequent work outside of normal working hours for overtime inspections or response to building safety concerns.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, and are in a “for-cause” employment status represented by the Mid-Management/Supervisory level bargaining unit. (Classified/Represented)
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
Under direction, supervises and participates in the work of the Building Inspection section of the Building & Life Safety Division, Community Development Department. Plans, assigns and reviews the work of a group of subordinate inspectors and provides technical staff assistance in one or more specialty areas, structural, electrical, mechanical or plumbing, performs related work as assigned.
This class is the supervisory level in the combination inspector series. Positions are characterized by the responsibility to supervise subordinate staff, to provide technical expertise and to respond to queries and resolve problems raised by staff and other clients. This class is distinguished from Deputy Building Official, which has overall responsibility for direction of the day-to-day operation and activity of the section.

Education/Experience:
Graduation from high school and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in building inspection, construction (at the journey level) engineering, architecture or a closely related field. An Associates of Arts/Science degree in engineering, architecture, building inspection or construction technology is highly desirable.
