The Literacy Lab Hiring for Director of People Experience and Organizational Culture Job at Remote Full Time

ABOUT THE POSITION: The Director of People Experience and Organizational Culture will lead the strategy to transform The Literacy Lab’s people experience and organizational culture into a best-in-class nonprofit in which our staff, AmeriCorps tutors, and Leading Men Fellows thrive and students see transformational progress. As the Director of People Experience and Organizational Culture, you will explore and create a strategy around questions like this:

• What will make roles across the organization personally meaningful and professionally sustainable?
• What systems and processes need to be in place to improve sustainability and increase the capacity of staff members, tutors, and Fellows?

This is a key leadership that will manage a wide range of responsibilities connected to strategic planning and implementation, managing the Human Resource team and responsibilities, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and facilitating the development of a more equitable people experience. As part of the Central Operations department, you will be working with a committed team of mission-driven, diverse, and experienced professionals who strive to improve practices and resources and facilitate the sustainable, impactful experience of the organization’s staff, tutors, and Fellows. This role will report to the Chief Operating Officer and manage a team of 3 people.

ABOUT THE LITERACY LAB: The Literacy Lab is a fast-paced, national non-profit organization, whose mission is to provide children from low-income households with individualized reading instruction to improve their literacy skills, leading to greater success in school and increased opportunities in life. We partner with school districts to add capacity in schools that have been historically under-resourced to close the literacy achievement gap for children before third grade.

The Literacy Lab’s mission is to address inequities by providing students of color with individualized reading instruction to improve their literacy skills. We believe that when young people of all races and from different economic brackets have equitable access to robust educational and professional development opportunities, they will be more successful as adults and their communities will be more resilient and prosperous.

Since 2009, The Literacy Lab has provided evidence-based literacy interventions to more than 30,000 children from marginalized communities to master early literacy skills. By embedding rigorously trained tutors in pre-K classrooms and elementary schools to tutor students of color from pre-K through third grade, The Literacy Lab strives to create a full six-year continuum of support for young readers.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops organization strategies by identifying and researching human resources issues; contributing information, analysis, and recommendations to organization strategic thinking and direction; establishing human resources objectives in line with organizational objectives.
• Implements human resources strategies by establishing department accountabilities including talent acquisition, staffing, employment processing, compensation, health and welfare benefits, training and development, records management, safety and health, succession planning, employee relations and retention, Equal Employment Opportunity compliance, and labor relations.
• Plans, develops, and leads human resources operations financial strategies by estimating and forecasting requirements, trends, and variances; aligning monetary resources; developing action plans; measuring and analyzing results; initiating corrective actions; minimizing the impact of variances.
• Accomplishes special project results by identifying and clarifying issues and priorities; communicating and coordinating requirements; managing implementation; evaluating milestone accomplishments; evaluating optional courses of action; changing assumptions and direction.
• Collaborates with and supports management by providing human resources advice, counsel, and decisions.
• Guides staff, tutor, and Fellow actions by researching, developing, writing, and updating policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines.
• Monitors and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
• Serves as a Learning Partner (LP) to the Human Resources team members, ensuring that they are provided with job coaching and training and opportunities for professional development; actively thinks about succession planning in terms of job coaching and creating legacy documentation.
• Engage in succession planning as an active aspect of the role, and ensure that legacy documents are produced and updated.
• Partners with other members of the Central Operations team and other staff members across the organization to evaluate the effectiveness of the department’s support of Literacy Lab’s staff, AmeriCorps Members, and Leading Men Fellows, and ensure that the organization’s human resources are aligned with the organizational mission, vision, and values.
• Commits to continuous learning in terms of human resources trends and best practices in addition to diversity, belonging, inclusion, and equity knowledge and competency development.
• Collaborates with the Equity, Impact, and Anti-Racism Manager to advance the organization’s culturally humble, anti-oppression aspirations.
• Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

• A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related degree, or the equivalent amount of experience, is required.
• AmeriCorps program experience or educational access and success work in a nonprofit setting are pluses.
• Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) CP or SCP Certification or Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) PHR or SPRH Certification is also a plus.

WORK LOCATION: You must live in one of The Literacy Lab’s current or future locations: Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, Washington D.C, and Wisconsin.

TRAVEL: This position may require out-of-town travel with notice.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: The salary range for this position is $100,000-110,000. Benefits include a flexible work environment, employer-paid health and dental insurance (employee only), employer-paid short and long-term disability, employer-paid life insurance, a 403b retirement plan, and paid vacation.
