Department Summary
It is the mission of Student Orientation
Programs to introduce new and prospective students and their families to the university’s intellectual climate. In addition, we seek
to improve the quality of the new student experience by providing assistance with academic, personal, and social adjustment to the
university, demonstrating the University of Oregon’s commitment to teaching, learning, and scholarship. Through recruitment programs
such as the Ambassador Program, Duck Preview, and Duck Days and orientation and transition events such as IntroDUCKtion, Oregon Migrations,
Week of Welcome, and the Welcome to the Flock series, Student Orientation Programs serves approximately 100,000 visitors, prospective
students, new students, and families. Additionally, through the Department’s outreach efforts, more than 100,000 Oregonians learn about the
University through community-based festivals, events, and educational programs throughout the state of Oregon. The department employs nearly
150 student staff each year, fostering skill and experience development, in an on-going student development effort. Department staff and
students conduct their work in a fast-paced, dynamic, high collaborative environment in a variety of settings.
Position
Summary
The essential function of the Coordinator for Orientation Programs is to manage student staff for orientation. The
position supports the operations of domestic undergraduate orientation and contributes to student development by executing a strong
university program. The position collaborates with faculty and staff throughout the University. The Coordinator executes administrative
procedures for Student Orientation Programs in consultation with the Assistant Director for Orientation Programs. This position has a
significant impact on the orientation and transition of students at the University because of its influence on the student leaders. The
Coordinator supports programs and services that connect students to the University using intentional student development and enrollment
transition theories. In addition, the Coordinator plays an integral role in the development of students employed within Student Orientation
Programs; supervision and advising of student staff includes staff development and evaluation. This position supervises 40+ student
employees; 60% of the incumbent’s time will be devoted to student supervision. The Coordinator will plan, assign and approve work,
address and carry out performance issues, respond to grievances, prepare and complete evaluations, and hire/terminate student employees.
