Plans, directs, and coordinates the operation and maintenance of all the wastewater treatment facilities in the County of Maui; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for directing the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of all the wastewater treatment facilities in the County of Maui.
The following are examples of duties. The omission of specific duty statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, marine, sanitary, or chemical engineering, chemistry, biology or a related field and five years of responsible supervisory experience in the operation and maintenance of a large and complex (1) wastewater reclamation facility (Hawaii Grade IV or equivalent), (2) industrial processing plant, or (3) electrical, nuclear, or alternate energy power generation facility.
License Requirement: Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Hawaii (equivalent to Hawaii Type 3).
Knowledge of: principles and practices of public administration, organization, public relations and reporting; principles and practices pertinent to the operation, installation, maintenance, overhaul, alteration, repair, and testing of wastewater treatment and pumping plant processes and equipment; sanitation requirements and principles involved in wastewater treatment; safety regulations and precautions,; principles of hydraulics and electricity, and construction principles and practices applicable to wastewater treatment facilities and appurtenant equipment.
Ability to: plan, organize, and direct the activities of a large and varied organization involved in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities and systems; coordinate activities with those of other agencies; review, analyze and interpret plans, specifications and reports relating to projects involving wastewater treatment plant facilities and appurtenant equipment; confer with design engineers and make recommendations on plans and specifications, new equipment, etc.; maintain good relationships with employees, government officials and the public; prepare budget estimates and periodic and special activity reports; administer training and safety programs; occasionally direct work under hazardous, obnoxious, filthy and unfavorable surroundings.

Vacation
Eligible employees earn up to 21 days of vacation per year, with a maximum year-to-year carry over of 90 days. Eligibility to accrue vacation begins with the first work day.
Sick Leave
Eligible employees accumulate up to 21 days of sick leave per year. Eligibility to accrue sick leave begins with the first work day, and there is no limitation on the amount of sick leave that may be accumulated.
Retirement Plan

Deferred Compensation Plan
Eligible employees may participate in the Island Savings Plan (a deferred compensation plan as provided under Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.) This is a supplemental retirement savings plan that allows for the investment of tax-deferred contributions into a variety of investment options.
Flex Spending Plan
Eligible employees can also participate in the County’s Flexible Spending plan, a way to set aside a portion of pay, before taxes, to pay for qualifying dependent care or medical expenses.
Employee Assistance Program
The County also offers a voluntary assistance program which provides its employees and their family members with free professional and confidential assistance in overcoming personal and work related problems.
Training
The County provides its employees with a variety of up-to-date training opportunities (i.e., computer application, professional seminars, heavy equipment operation, administrative & clerical skills, personal safety, etc.) to help them increase their knowledge, gain new skills, and to be more satisfied and effective in their jobs.
Leave Sharing
The County’s leave sharing program allows employees to donate accumulated vacation leave credits to a qualified fellow employee who has a serious personal illness or injury.
