There are 2 vacancies with the Department of Environmental Services, Collection System Maintenance Division. This position works under general supervision with substantial latitude for independent judgement. Serves as the Wastewater Pumping Plant Operator for one or more high or low voltage electrically operated and powered wastewater or storm drain pumping stations on an assigned shift; operates and services internal combustion engine-powered pumping units and electrical generating units and auxiliary equipment; coordinates work with and assists workers performing highly skilled work in the major overhaul and repair of the mechanical and electrical equipment; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Special Working Conditions: The complex electrical and mechanical wastewater pumping equipment has a high monetary value and plays and important part in maintaining the health standards of the community. Negligence due to lack of knowledge, interest or indecision in the operation, maintenance or repair of the equipment cannot be tolerated as the health and property of people living in the community and the life of other employees are involved. Employee works alone at night, holidays and weekends. The employee is exposed to moving machinery; dangerous voltage (11,000 volts); depths and heights and deadly wastewater gases; asphyxiation and contamination from disease bearing wastewater. Works in unfavorable, obnoxious, filthy and hazardous surroundings.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position, or which show equivalent competence in the operation and maintenance of electrical pumping plant, marine engine room, electrical power plant, or related industrial-type equipment.
EXAMPLES OF QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE:
Wastewater pumping/treatment plant experience is not necessary, but applicants must have work experience in troubleshooting, servicing and maintaining, or repairing engines, pumps, valves and compressors in one of the following areas: Â automotive or heavy equipment mechanic, marine machining, marine engine room tending, boiler tending, tank farms (oil or gas) tending, installation of plant pumping equipment, aircraft or automotive power train repair, sugar mills, or any comparable stationary equipment repair.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Valid appropriate driver’s license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.
