Ordinance Officer Job Description

The City Ordinance Officer is an assigned position to the Huntington Police Department. The position has no police powers outside of enforcing Huntington City Ordinances. The Ordinance Officer is responsible for enforcing all City Ordinances within the Huntington City limits. Responsibilities also include enforcement of downtown parking regulations and red tagging of all non-compliant vehicles, as well as all other duties as assigned.
Duties:
The Ordinance Officer investigates all reported and witnessed ordinance violations, and processes the information in a timely fashion in accordance with the nuisance codes of the City of Huntington. The position follows up on all violations and processes the appropriate paperwork with the City Clerk Treasurer’s Office. The position also directs the cleanup crews to correct citations on all properties in violation.
The Ordinance Officer patrols and enforces all parking ordinances and parking law in the downtown district, and issues appropriate written tickets on all parking violations. The position interacts on the police radio and departmental cell phone with police dispatchers to reported ordinance violations, citizen complaints as well as reported parking and found property calls. Regular communication with police units to ensure safe enforcement of all violations is required.
Periodically assisting Community Development and Health Departments in identifying and processing all observed and reported complaints, per established City Codes. Other associated duties include attending Board of Works meetings, Code Enforcement Meetings, and supplying the City Attorney with information and updates on cases that are referred to his office for review and processing.
The Ordinance Officer must have an understanding and ability to explain all aspects of the ordinance process to all members of the general public, as well as all other departmental agencies.
Responsibilities:
The Ordinance Officer must have the ability to make informed and reasonable decisions to stressful situations in accordance with departmental and ordinance policies and procedures.
Personal Work Relationships:
The position maintains frequent contact with a wide variety of individuals, including department and city personnel, other law enforcement and public safety agencies, and members of the public, primarily for the purpose of receiving and responding to ordinance and parking calls for investigation and service. The position regularly responds in non-routine contact with members of the general public requesting assistance in other the ordinance complaints.
Physical Effort and Work Environment
The Ordinance Officer performs duties in an office, vehicle and outdoor environment, as well as being frequently exposed to stressful situations associated with confrontations that arise from responding to complaints, issuing parking tickets, clean-up of properties, and towing of non-compliant vehicles. This position requires being able to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
Education and Certifications
This position must maintain a valid Indiana Operators License, and have GED or High School Diploma, post high school and or previous work experience in this field is preferred. A criminal security check will be completed prior to the time of hire. Initial and periodic random drug screening test will be performed and must be passed.
The Ordinance Officer will be sworn in the by City Clark Treasurer as to the duties and responsibilities at the time of hire.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.50 – $20.00 per hour
