Assistant General Manager – Goodman Lumber Operations

Besse Forest Products Group, headquartered in Gladstone, MI, is one of the leading producers of hardwood lumber, veneer, and plywood in North America. Operations include four sawmills, lumber concentration yard, three veneer mills, one plywood plant, and employs over 350 personnel.

We are currently seeking an Assistant General Manager for Goodman Veneer & Lumber, located in Goodman, WI. The sawmill was completely rebuilt in 2019 to maximize efficiency.

Key Areas of Responsibilities Include:

• Assist in managing the Goodman hardwood sawmill and dry kiln operations.
• Ensure quality control of the hardwood lumber with special emphasis on managing the concentration yard. This includes 600,000 board feet of kiln capacity and an air-drying yard.
• Identify, recommend, and implement changes to improve productivity and efficiencies including costs.
• Own the communication process to ensure plant personnel and the company’s senior management are kept informed of conditions, trends, and important activities affecting the wood business along with daily results, quality issues, and other business needs.
• The position will manage 5 direct reports and 50-60 indirect reports.

Desired Skills and Experience

• 5+ years of management experience in the hardwood lumber industry.
• 4-year degree in Forestry or related field is a plus, but not required.
• Knowledge of NHLA lumber grading rules.
• Strong business acumen.
• Must demonstrate self-confidence, motivation, and process excellent verbal and written communication skills together with strong analytical abilities.
• Proficient in MS Office Suite is a plus.
