CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO POLICE DEPARTMENT LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINEE!
The Law Enforcement Trainee position is for individuals interested in a career as a police officer, but have not yet completed Basic Academy training. Once hired, LETs are enrolled in the 23 week Basic Police Academy where they learn the skills and duties of performing law enforcement functions. While in the Academy, LETs are paid an hourly wage and benefits. Upon graduation from the Academy, LETs are appointed to the rank of Police Officer. New Police Officers then complete an additional 19 weeks of field training with an assigned Field Training Officer. After the completion of the field training program, officers are prepared to work alone in the field.

Applicants who have graduated from an accredited institution with an Associate’s degree or higher will not be required to take the written examination. Applicants who have taken the California POST PELLETB exam within the last 6 months of date of application may submit their scores on official letterhead to be considered for exemption from the written exam. POST PELLETB scores from a P.O.S.T. approved institution or verification of completion of Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited school must be submitted with application. Note: If you do not attach proof of your degree or POST PELLETB score to your application you will not be waived from the written exam.

Temporary, part-time and seasonal employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 to June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS retired annuitants. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in the City’s deferred compensation plan is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7.5% of their salary per pay period.
