Position Summary
As Director of People + Culture, you will be responsible for partnering closely with the CEO as well as leaders across the company, to attract, develop, and retain the best talent in the industry. This role combines building our team (recruiting), with the responsibility to own the full life cycle of our teammates (Human Resources).
At the end of the day, our company is people – and in this role you’ll have the opportunity to own the experience for those people that create the best outcome for our community, company and team. It is essential that our environment- our norms, principles, and practice- attract exceptional people and support them in pursuing outsized impacts. You will be responsible for cultivating an environment that sets our people up for success, generating an outstanding employee experience, and structuring systems that enable a fast-growing organization to consistently scale excellent performance. You will be responsible for multiple critical parts of a quickly growing company, and over time, build and lead a team to move these areas forward.
We are looking for someone with full-spectrum people operations experience who has spent several years in a senior people role. Bonus if you have been the first- or second-people person at a growing, mid-size organization. We realize no one person is likely to embody all the below characteristics, but we expect many of them to align with your current abilities, and we expect that you are eager to grow and develop your capabilities across these areas.
You will report to our Founder + CEO and will work closely with company leaders to develop and implement best practices for how we can best grow and support Little Sleepies.
Essential Duties + Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Recruitment and Onboarding
Design and deploy recruitment strategies to attract exceptional people: Little Sleepies is growing fast and building its team to scale. You will partner with other leaders to develop strategies, tactics, and tools to attract and recruit talented individuals.
Strengthen relationships with third parties and vendors systems that multiply the company’s reach and access to a diverse and qualified talent pool.
Engagement and Culture
Understand, support and embody a culture that reinforces our mission and values, sustains morale, engages multilateral feedback, embraces and is resilient to growth, and attracts incredible new talent to accelerate a continuous improvement mentality.
Champion a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace and design and implement practices to support their achievement.
Optimize the employee lifecycle: From recruitment through alumni status, people’s interactions with the company should be positive. You will identify and shore up gaps in our current approach to the various stages of the employee relationship.
Own our strategy for distributed work including a geographically distributed talent strategy, collaboration, and culture building efforts.
Own our diversity and inclusion efforts to build a team that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, making it possible to do the work of creating a community that is inclusive by design.
Design and implement a learning and development program that fosters individual skill growth and career development for employees at all levels within the company.
Performance Management
Coordinate Talent Development: Create individual (e.g., coaching opportunities and feedback) and group solutions (e.g., training programs) to improve capabilities at all levels of the organization, including management and line staff.
Review and improve performance management approaches to develop and retain existing staff. Upgrade our performance review templates and methodologies.
Design organizational structures and career pathways that encourage effective operations, and support mutually beneficial growth opportunities for maturing employees and efficient succession and contingency planning.
Policy and Program Implementation
Establish people-oriented policies and practices that are aligned with, and enhance, our mission and core values, and see that they are adhered to consistently.
Optimize employee compensation and benefits programs to ensure market competitiveness and reflect our values and the needs of our people.
Manage our external human resources partners (including payroll, health and wellness program, retirement programs) and ensure the company is compliant with all labor-related regulations. Facilitate annual programs such as the employee engagement survey(s), open enrollment, and 403(b) testing.
Employee Advocacy: drive team member retention by helping to implement engagement strategies while serving as the employee advocate by managing human resource related issues ensuring the employee’s voice is heard.
Minimum Qualification (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)
Bachelor’s degree in business management, business administration, or equivalent related experience, but not less than 10+ years’ experience in a People function or not less than 5 years in a similar people leadership role for D2C ecommerce companies; apparel industry a plus
Experience building robust talent and onboarding strategies and programs that allow people to hit the ground running.
Excellent understanding of human resources best practices, employment laws and regulations.
Experience building culture at rapidly growing organizations preferably in mission driven companies.
Previous success in partnership with hiring managers at all levels to develop detailed and compelling job specifications mapped to clear business outcomes and tied to career progression and compensation strategies.
Proven track record of representing companies in a professional, articulate, knowledgeable, and intelligent manner.
Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, coaching and listening skills with the ability to communicate within all levels of the organization.
Proven ability to remain objective, discrete and exercise common sense.
Superior project management skills with the ability to maintain organization objectives while being detail oriented and execution focused.
Possess high social and emotional intelligence demonstrated by your ability to mentor leaders and team members cultivating strong relationships throughout the organization.
Flexibility to operate at a strategic level with the ability to deep dive tactically.
Prior demonstrated experience building, leading, and managing a diverse team.
Highly self-motivated and flexible with an entrepreneurial spirit.
A “no task is too small or too large” type-of-attitude.
