Overview
This position manages the day-to-day operations of the ITP/IMA Makerspace, a state of the art prototyping facility housed in NYU’s MTA (Media, Technology and Art) Building, 370 Jay Street. This position will manage student staff, support academic and research initiatives, develop and shape programs and product offerings; develop and propose workshops, events, and classes for membership offerings, and new program elements. The position will work directly with faculty and administrators regarding operations, financials, improvements, and future challenges, all the while developing and implementing safety training protocols, and monitoring the enforcement of safety policies and guidelines in accordance with NYU policy requirements. The manager will stay up to date on developments in the industry and make recommendations for new equipment, hardware and software platforms that will be necessary to support the academic needs of the departments. The space, which primarily serves faculty, students and researchers connected with the graduate program (ITP) and undergraduate program (IMA) supports interdisciplinary teamwork using the new tools of rapid prototyping and digitally driven production, as well as traditional shop tools. In addition to providing access to state of the art tools, from advanced software to milling machines to 3D printers to laser cutters, the space will function as a stimulating environment for fostering human exchanges and collaborative learning; it will also create a participatory space for design projects. The space also supports non-academic short-term workshops and classes.
