Assistant/Associate Director, Human Resources

The Assistant/Associate Director, Human Resources (HR Generalist) plays a critical role in supporting a positive and engaging work environment at MoMA, fostering a culture of high performance, innovation and passion. Reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the HR Generalist will contribute to strategy and plan development, and administer a comprehensive program of human resources administration. This includes policy development, employee and labor relations, organizational development, workforce planning, performance management and employee engagement. The HR Generalist will also work closely with the Compensation Manager, Learning and Development Manager, Benefits Manager and Talent Acquisition Manager to provide on-going support in the areas of job analysis and classification, compensation, benefits administration, diversity and inclusion programs, recruitment and onboarding. This role also ensures MoMA is in compliance with union and non-union labor laws and good people management practices, and proactively recommends solutions and leads initiatives that enhance organizational effectiveness and contribute to the achievement of MoMA s vision and mission. Influences and advises on people and related matters, and acts as a trusted advisor on sensitive and/or critical issues. Ensures high quality delivery of fundamental HR services through meaningful metrics, reports, dashboards, and continuous process improvement, and is a highly ethical, visible member of client and HR leadership teams. Able to understand and leverage a broad range of HR and client organizational knowledge for action planning, issue prevention and strategic initiative implementation.

The HR Generalist will:

• Provide daily hands on HR expertise to assigned departments in the areas of labor relations, employee relations, employee development, organizational development and more, as well as provide backup HR to HR colleagues.
• Identify strategic initiatives and partner on the design and execution of innovative solutions; ensure top level strategy is integrated into line-level actions.
• Build relationships with staff at all levels, and across the institution; assure that new recruits integrate effectively into the institution.
• Partner with management to resolve employee relation issues; provide coaching and counseling to management and staff; collaborate with legal counsel on issues as appropriate, and ensure hiring and termination procedures comply with MoMA policy and other applicable laws.
• Work with HR colleagues to ensure MoMA s employee value proposition (EVP) is reflected throughout HR s policies and practices and ensure the EVP is thoroughly communicated to staff.
• Manage MoMA Personnel Policy Development and maintain Employee Manual. Prepare and maintain human resource documents and reports, and the maintenance of personnel records.
• Provide research support in the preparation for labor negotiations; assist in the administration of labor agreements.
• Partner with Learning and Development lead to identify opportunities; help develop and facilitate organization-specific training sessions; assess training effectiveness through evaluations.
• Consult with department hiring managers to assure hiring and termination procedures comply with MoMA policy and other applicable laws.

The candidate must be a leader, demonstrating at least eight years of experience partnering with senior leadership and serving as a credible and trusted resource, and demonstrate an ability to think strategically. Equally significant qualifications include strong integrity, excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal relationship skills.

In terms of the performance and personal competencies required for the position, we would highlight the following:

• Possess a full range of functional HR skills (employee relations, performance management, coaching/counseling, organizational development, and change management) with a solid understanding of a client-facing, HR business partner service model; strong consultative, negotiation, analytical and influencing skills.
• Utilizes MoMA s mission, vision and core values, to assure project outcomes reflect the needs and best interest of the organization; ability to envision, distill, communicate, develop and implement short and long-term human resource/change management initiatives.
• Conscientiously develops, monitors, and reports the budgets for HR projects and programs and brings forth on a timely basis, ideas, issues, and concerns regarding fiscal matters to the HR Director.
• Continuously develops and utilizes up-to-date knowledge of benefit and compensation administration and management including the ability to synthesize and evaluate data to perform some finance related duties and analysis.
• Continuously develops and utilizes up-to-date knowledge of HR practices, methodologies and laws to expertly administer HR programs.
• Effectively communicates to others in a manner that ensures clear and mutual understanding of information. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all employees by building rapport, listening to needs and being approachable. When advising employees, uses tact and diplomacy. Supports and provides equal and fair treatment and opportunity for all.

• College Degree. Major course work in business, human resources, industrial psychology or related field, or equivalent combination of training.
