Litigation Paralegal – Federal Agency (Baton Rouge, Louisiana)
Federal agency is seeking an experienced litigation paralegal for their Baton Rouge, Louisiana office for a 5-year contract.
Location: 451 Florida Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70801
Hours: 8:00am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. * All work must be done On-Site
Background check required including credit check and drug screening
Compensation: $30.50/hour (this includes Health & Welfare compensation)
Job Duties:
· Receives newly opened case files and takes necessary measures to notify the proper client agency of service and to obtain a litigation report and/or other needed case information.
· As directed, establishes and updates databases to track receipt of cases, upcoming deadlines, and other case information. Keeps attorneys and appropriate staff members informed of the status of cases.
· Monitors the progress of pending cases and initiates action to ensure that established deadlines are met.
· Maintains case files and case related materials within a physical or electronic filing system that is accessible and enables easy retrieval.
· With supervision, drafts subpoenas and related documents and ensures proper delivery of such. Tracks recipients’ compliance with subpoenas and follows-up to ensure compliance.
· Maintains discovery material and other case related records in an indexed filing system that is accessible and enables easy retrieval.
· Manages the collection, preservation, review, and production of evidence, including electronic evidence, in civil litigation. Utilizes electronic discovery tools and review databases to assist with discovery.
(c) Provides a variety of legal documents, correspondence, and other related material. Typical assignments include:
· Independently prepares a variety of repetitive/routine documents and submits for Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) review and approval prior to filing/issuance.
· Composes original letters that do not require legal interpretations but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology. Examples include transmittal of pleadings, status updates to client agencies, and notices to adverse counsel and/or co-counsel.
Verifies citations and statutory references contained in legal documents, ensuring that citations are correct, complete, and consistent with source materials; and Detects and corrects format, spelling, and grammatical errors;
· Maintains AUSAs’ court calendars as directed. Assembles exhibits. Schedules court reporters, witnesses, and conferences. Answers outside inquiries not requiring legal interpretations and refers other questions to appropriate office members. Exercises judgment and discretion in determining information provided to telephonic inquiries and visitors.
· Independently conducts legal research using electronic databases, including Westlaw and Lexis.
