Job Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care of patients. The staff RN utilizes the nursing process by use of technology, therapeutic intervention, evidence-based practice and coordination of care with other health team members.
Provides professional nursing care to patients being admitted for surgical and other procedures in the Perioperative Services Department, including, PACU Advanced Recovery and Phase 2 care, Endoscopy and the Pain Clinic. This position requires rotational call coverage for PACU, including weekdays, weekends and holidays.
The shift will be (4) tens: 9-7:30pm; on-call is required. Most often 1 night a week and one weekend every 5 weeks. Rotating holiday schedule for on-call, surgery is not open on holidays. Call team only
Scope:
Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies Physician of patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
Recognizes abnormal test results and contraindications relative to scheduled procedures and reports abnormal results to appropriate physician or department for further guidelines.
Demonstrates ability to assess/reassess nursing care needs by age group.
Ability to assess and interpret clinical reports and data to provide optimum care of surgical services patient.
Assists and participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of departmental Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement activities
Acts as a resource for surgical services and other hospital staff.
Maintains productive, professional and collaborative relationship with all associates and departments.
Demonstrates comprehensive time management, communication, and team building skills.
Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory and institutional requirements.
Provides age appropriate teaching to patient/families and members of healthcare team.
Demonstrates competent clinical nursing skills and knowledge when performing, teaching, and supervising nursing procedures.
Demonstrates skill and competency in IV venipuncture
Demonstrates proficiency in use of IV Pumps
Maintains and updates knowledge of care of various surgical and special procedures, therapeutic drug and IV administration.
Demonstrates proficiency in cardiac monitoring, specialized central line care and modalities of treatment, airway maintenance, BLS, ACLS, PALS, and Moderate Sedation skills.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in care of sedated patient. Demonstrates knowledge and competency in the assessment, reassessment, and modalities to alleviate pain pre- and post- procedure.
Verifies pre-operative/procedural chart and checklist completion
Demonstrates knowledge of standing physician orders for procedures as well as the pre-op minimum laboratory testing guide.
Demonstrates skill and competency in phlebotomy and follows laboratory services guidelines.
Demonstrates skill and competency in phlebotomy and follows blood banking guidelines.
Provides pre-operative care of surgical patients, (i.e. Pre –op chart completion, IV starts, TED hose and SCD application, sedation, and monitoring). Demonstrates knowledge and competency in care of patients in Phase I and II Post Anesthesia Care.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in care of anesthetized or sedated patients.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in the transport of critical/high risk patients.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in care of Endoscopy patient pre and post procedure
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in the care of the patient experiencing acute/chronic pain management needs.
Demonstrates knowledge of specific procedures and medication used in the management of acute/chronic pain.
Demonstrates ability to follow physician orders for application of braces, splints, and immobilizers’ etc. pre and post op.
Aids anesthesia care provider during anesthesia procedures for the treatment of acute/chronic pain.
Develops, directs and implements a plan for patient and family teaching for post-procedure care and follow-up.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
BSN Degree
* from an accredited program required within 4 years unless 15 years of acute care service.
* Failure to obtain a BSN degree within this time frame may result in suspension or termination of employment. Nurses employed by the Hospital on or before September 1, 2014 with only an ASN/ADN, will be exempt from the requirement to obtain a BSN. Any nurse hired by the hospital from September 2, 2014 through April 15, 2019 will have 5 years/60 month, from date of hire, to obtain a BSN.
Any nurse who takes legally protected leave during any of the completion periods may have the period extended by a comparable amount of time
Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice is required
ACLS certification required within 9 months of hire/transfer
PALS certification required within 9 months of hire/transfer
